Michelle Agyemang becomes first black female footballer to win individual award at women’s Euros

Agyemang netted two goals in the competition.
Michelle Agyemang enjoyed an excellent tournament and was named the Young Player of the Tournament at Euro 2025. In doing so, she also became the first black female footballer to win an individual award at the women’s Euros.
The 19-year-old attacker for Arsenal did not start a single game during the campaign in Switzerland, playing just 138 minutes.
She did, however, play a key role in the Lionesses’ journey to win the European championship again, defeating Spain in the Basel final by penalty shootout.
Sarina Wiegman’s team remained in the running thanks to late equalisers from Agyemang against Sweden in the quarterfinal and Italy in the semifinals.
From ball girl to Euro winner
She was a ball girl for England’s World Cup qualifying match versus Northern Ireland at Wembley four years ago. It was Sarina Wiegman’s inaugural match at the venue and her third total as manager. That day, Beth Mead, Agyemang’s future teammate, netted a hat-trick.
The attacker was a member of Arsenal’s academy at the time, and 13 months later, in October 2022, with English football at its peak following the Lionesses’ summertime Euro victory, she made her official debut.
Unexpectedly, Agyemang played a key role in helping them raise the trophy when they defeated Spain on Sunday to retain the title.
Considering she didn’t get enough time on the pitch, winning Young Player of the Tournament underlines her performance whenever she received a chance, as she left her mark in the competition.
Wiegman will certainly count on her for future major competitions, given that she is young and will be the backbone of the nation and lead them to more success.
