Super sub Wout Weghorst helps Netherlands win 2-1 against Poland: Euro 2024

The Oranje will next face Didier Deschamps’s France.
Wout Weghorst, who was brought on in the 81st minute by Netherlands coach Ronald Koeman, provided much-needed fresh legs in the last quarter.
At Hamburg’s Volksparkstadion on Sunday, the Netherlands defeated Poland 2-1 to begin their Euro 2024 campaign. The game’s winning goal was scored by super sub Wout Weghorst.
Starting without its top scorer and superstar attacker Robert Lewandowski, Poland took the lead in the 16th minute when Adam Buksa beat Denzel Dumfries to head a corner kick into the goal.
He became the most recent Polish player since Lewandowski to score a goal in the Euro 2024 and the goal came with a style and it appeared Poland were set to be a big threat to the Dutch side.
However, the happiness of his team was short-lived as Cody Gakpo scored his 10th goal for his country 13 minutes later to tie the score.
Nathan Ake seized onto Nicola Zalewski’s clearing, allowing Gakpo to get to the ball and following a deflection, smash a shot that hit the net.
When it comes to big events, Gakpo starts quickly. At the 2022 World Cup, he scored in each of the Netherlands’ three group matches. The Netherlands advanced to the quarterfinals but only succumbed to Argentina on penalties following a 2-2 draw.
Weghorst, who also substituted Depay in the 78th minute, added two late goals to force an extra period that day in Doha.
A police shooting incident occurred prior to the game in the downtown St. Pauli district, where a large number of Dutch fans had assembled.
Approximately 50,000 Dutch fans travelled the short distance to Hamburg. It appeared to have nothing to do with football. A man who tried to harm them using an axe and a Molotov cocktail, according to the police, was shot and hurt.
