The tragic incident comes out of the city of Hamburg, which is playing host to matches from the Euros.

Eyes from around the world are firmly set on the ongoing 2024 UEFA European Championships in Germany. The tournament started only a few days ago and fans of participating countries come to the host nation in large numbers to support their national teams. However, there is always a chance of things going south and one such incident has made news.

An individual has been confirmed to have been shot by the German police after threatening fans with a pickaxe in the run-up to the fixture between the Netherlands and Poland. The contest is set to take place in Hamburg on 16 June 2024. Before the beginning of the Group D clash between two strong European footballing nations, fans from either side were seen mingling, bantering and exchanging pleasantries.

However, an individual, amidst the rush of people, was observed to be threatening fans with violence and brandishing a pickaxe. To pacify the situation and prevent it from escalating, the German police took immediate action as four loud shots were heard.

What Happened

German police revealed that an individual was threatening the officers and fans with a sharp weapon and an incendiary device. However, after the swift action by the police, the individual was shot, contained and received medical treatment for his injuries.

“According to initial findings, a person threatened police officers with a pickaxe and an incendiary device. The police then used their firearms. The attacker was injured and is currently receiving medical treatment,” their statement said.

As a result, Reeperbahn in Hamburg has been closed by the German police which housed thousands of Dutch fans who came in numbers to support their team in the ongoing European Championships. Seeing any reports of violence is not ideal during a sporting event of such a large scale as the Euros but the swift action by the German police authorities is positive to see.
