Why Neymar joining Lionel Messi & Luis Suarez at Inter Miami is impossible?
The Brazilian was linked with a move to Inter Miami.
Neymar is unlikely to join Lionel Messi and Luis Suarez at Inter Miami, as coach Javier Mascherano stated that the Brazilian’s signing would be “impossible” for the MLS team.
Mascherano, who performed with the trio at Barcelona in the latter part of his career and took over as manager of Inter Miami at the end of 2024, emphasized that money problems will just prevent any such transfer from taking place.
This is true even though Neymar hinted at a reunion with Messi and Suarez, emphasizing that although he is “happy” with Al Hilal in Saudi Arabia right now, a move is definitely not out of the question.
“Obviously, playing again with (Lionel) Messi and (Luis) Suarez would be incredible,” Neymar told CNN. “They are my friends. We still speak to each other. It would be interesting to revive this trio.”
Mascherano, though, downplayed any transfer links with the Brazilian.
“We cannot talk about Ney because we have nothing,” Mascherano said, as per Reuters. “Obviously Ney is a great player. Every coach in the world wants him but at the moment, but you know the MLS rules around the salary cap. So for us in this moment, it’s impossible to try to think about him.”
Three chosen players are permitted for each MLS team, and teams are permitted to give the three stars more than the $683,750 salary threshold.
Jordi Alba and Luis Suarez both made less than the salary cap imposed on teams at the beginning of 2024 because Lionel Messi, Sergio Busquets, and Leonardo Campana were Inter Miami’s three selected players.
Although Campana has since left for the New England Revolution, it doesn’t appear that Inter Miami will have another vacancy for a Designated Player.
Rather, the David Beckham-owned team appears to have opted for the U22 Initiative Player Model, which allows clubs to use up to four U22 Initiative roster spots, two Designated Player roster slots, and an extra $2 million in General Allocation Money (GAM). Only three Designated Player and three U22 Initiative roster spots are available under the Designated Player Model.
Therefore, as Mascherano points out, signing Neymar is just not possible while maintaining Jordi Alba and Luis Suarez at the club and adhering to MLS salary cap regulations.
