The Magpies eliminated Chelsea in the last round.

After thrashing Leicester City 4-0 in the weekend’s Premier League action, Newcastle United are now set to lock horns with Brentford, who have already defeated them once this season, in the quarterfinal of the Carabao Cup (EFL Cup) at St. James Park.

Newcastle United have endured a mixed form in the new season accumulating 23 points from the starting 16 matches to sit 12th in the table. However, Eddie Howe’s side have a golden chance to take a closer step to silverware this season as his side will face Brentford in the quarterfinal. Although they lost to the same opponent on match day 15, we can expect this to change as they will have the home support on their side and their players returning to form.

Brentford on the other hand have impressed with their attacking display this season after finding themselves among the top scorers in the starting games. However, their away form has been concerning after losing six away matches in seven games in all competitions. Having already defeated them this season, if Thomas Frank’s side can tighten up at the back, they have a huge chance to continue their fairy-tale run in this competition.

Kick-Off:

Wednesday, 18 December 2024 at 7:45 PM UK

Thursday 19 December 2024 at 1:15 AM IST

Location: St. James’ Park

Form:

Newcastle United (in all competitions): L-D-D-L-W

Brentford (in all competitions): D-W-L-W-L

Players to Watch

Alexander Isak (Newcastle United)

After a slow start to the season, Alexander Isak is back to his brilliant best having scored in his last three consecutive matches. He has already played a massive role in their push in this competition after eliminating Chelsea in the previous round with a well-taken goal. His movements have been exquisite this season, and he has also started to be in his real shape. This season, he already has eight goals in all competitions while providing another four assists.

Bryan Mbeumo (Brentford)

Bryan Mbeumo has been in relentless form for the Bees this season and is arguably their best player. Fresh from scoring against Chelsea, he will be eyeing to net another goal to take his tally to ten for the season. He has already battered his tally from last season. With the form he is in we can expect him to give the home side problems here with his excellent movement and speed.

Injury & Team News

As for Brentford, they will be delighted to have Vitaly Janelt back in the squad after returning from injury. However, they are still missing Aaron Hickey, Joshua Dasilva, and Mathias Jensen while Rico Henry will be assessed prior to the match.
