The club are exploring a potential return of the eight-time Ballon d’Or winner.
According to Juan Manuel Medina, vice president of Newell’s Old Boys, the team is “working on” a return of Lionel Messi in 2027. The Argentine club are keen to have the Inter Miami player return as the face of a new “project for the city of Rosario” after he made his football debut at the youth level.
Despite Messi’s recent signing of a new deal with Inter Miami through 2028, ties to his boyhood team remain. Now that Messi is still going strong at the ripe old age of 38, Medina has come out to reveal that Newell’s are actively working to close a deal for him.
Newell’s Old Boys vice president speaks on Lionel Messi’s potential return to the club
In an interview with TN, the vice president of Newell’s stated:
“We are working on Leo playing for Newell’s in the first half of 2027, but for now, there is nothing more than that. It’s a project that goes beyond Newell’s. It’s a project for the city of Rosario, the province, and Argentine football.”
According to Medina’s remarks, Lionel Messi might sign a loan deal with the team to return to his childhood club.
In addition, Medina stated that first communication had been established with Lionel Messi’s group, saying: “There was talk, the idea was raised, but today there are no decisions.”
In 2025, Lionel Messi led Inter Miami to their first-ever MLS Cup victory with an incredible 29 goals and 19 assists, earning him MLS MVP for the second consecutive season.
With Javier Mascherano’s team scheduled to begin their MLS schedule away at LAFC on February 22, the eight-time Ballon d’Or winner is currently getting ready for the start of the 2026 season.
