Croatia vs Panama: Five Key Battles to Watch out for in FIFA World Cup 2026

Panama and Croatia both lost their opening fixtures in the FIFA World Cup

Croatia and Panama will go into their matchweek 2 fixture knowing it is a must-win for both sides. Both nations lost their opening group games, with England currently placed at the top.

Luka Modric’s Croatia, in particular, will be eagerly chasing a win given that they have made it to the final and the semi-finals on the last two occasions. Here are five key battles to watch in this FIFA World Cup 2026 match.

5. Ivan Perisic vs Amir Murillo

Though Croatia lost their opening game to England, the 37-year-old Ivan Perisic was a livewire throughout the match. Croatia’s left wing-back tried to create multiple chances through crosses. even assisting Petr Musa’s goal.

Perisic will be playing against Amir Murillo, who is Panama’s right wing-back. The 30-year-old had a decent opening game, but there is still a lot of room to improve. Amir will come across Perisic throughout the match, and if he keeps the Croatian in check, they will significantly reduce their opponent’s chances.

4. Luka Modric vs. Yoel Barcenas

The battle of the captains will be one to watch on the field. On one end, Luka Modric will be playing his 200th game for Croatia. The AC Milan player had a mixed opening game but will be stepping onto the pitch with renewed belief against Panama.

When it comes to Panama, their captain, Yoel Barcenas, will have responsibilities similar to those of Modric in central midfield. The 32-year-old has been playing for Mexican club Mazatlan since 2022.

Between the two, whoever wins this midfield battle will dictate the pace of the game.

3. Josip Sutalo vs Ismael Diaz

Panama’s Ismael Diaz is an experienced campaigner at 29. He has represented Panama since 2014 and has scored 18 times for his country. Ismael was used as a substitute against Ghana, and he immediately created an urgency in attack once he came on.

Croatia’s Josip Sutalo will be the one going against Ismael. The centre-back won nine duels in the last game, amongst other defensive contributions. Though Sutalo will have a clear height advantage, Ismael Diaz’s pace and trickery will not help the defender in his duties.

2. Petar Musa vs Jose Cordoba

Jose Cordoba currently plays for Norwich City in the English Championship, and the centre-back has already made 33 appearances for Panama at the young age of 25 years. Cordoba has also played for Panama’s U23 side. The defender will be up against Petar Musa, who will lead the line for Croatia in this Group L game.

The striker plays for FC Dallas in the MLS, and his experience of playing on US soil will definitely come in handy. The striker was allowed just one shot against England, which he scored with in the last game. Musa will certainly be looking to add more to his tally against Croatia.

1. Josko Gvardiol vs Cecilio Watermans

Cecilio Waterman has scored 14 goals in 50+ games for his national team since debuting in 2010. While his form has dipped over the last year, Croatia had a goal ratio (xG) of 3.2, giving Panama attackers better scoring chances.

The job of keeping Panama at bay will fall to Josko Gavrdiol. The Manchester City defender attempted 47 passes; he was involved in multiple defensive situations, but England were just very strong. Gvardiol will be looking to register a statement win against Cecilio’s Panama.
