Who is Pape Gueye? Senegal midfielder who scored twice vs Iraq at FIFA World Cup 2026

Pape Gueye now has two World Cup goals to his name.

Senegal defeated Iraq 5-0 in their last group-stage game of the ongoing FIFA World Cup. The Teranga Lions finally got the statement win they had been eagerly looking forward to.

Courtesy of an assist from Abdoulaye Seck, Habib Dairra broke the deadlock for Senegal in the 4th minute. However, that was the only goal that was scored in the first 45 minutes of the match. Nine minutes of extra time were added in the first half, and both sides came close to scoring, but nothing worked.

Ismaila Sarr added the second goal for the African giants. However, the actual spotlight was stolen by Pape Gueye. He was introduced into the match in the 56th minute at Lamine Camara’s spot, and he had an immediate impact. Gueye scored twice within 15 minutes for the Teranga Lions.

Pape Alassane Gueye was born on January 24, 1999, in Montreuil, France. He started his football journey at the youth team of Blanc-Mesnil SF. Later, he joined La Havre, where Gueye also made his senior debut.

After a few games in Ligue 2, he signed a professional contract with the same side. He then joined Watford in April 2020. However, only 24 hours later, Watford agreed to Gueye’s transfer to Marseille. He went on to play 115 games for Marseille in four years, primarily playing as a defensive midfielder.

He also spent some time on loan at Sevilla before signing a four-year contract with another Liga side, Villarreal, in July 2024. At Villarreal, Pape Gueye has become a regular starter. Last season, he made 39 appearances for the side across all competitions, scoring five goals and providing two assists.

His performance earned him a place in Pape Thiaw’s 2026 FIFA World Cup squad, where he has delivered stellar performances.
