Paraguay vs Australia: Five key battles to watch out for in FIFA World Cup 2026

Socceroos are a point away from making it to Round of 32 in FIFA World Cup 2026
San Francisco Bay Area Stadium in the United States of America gears up to host the final matchweek fixtures of Group D in the FIFA World Cup 2026, where South American outfit Paraguay and Australia lock horns in what promises to be a thrilling contest.
Group D is in a very interesting scenario. The USA have qualified as table toppers, and Turkiye has been eliminated. The winner of the game will move to six points and qualify behind the USA. A draw wouldn’t be a bad result either, as Australia would finish second with 4 points, and Paraguay would surely be one of the best third-ranked teams with four points.
The Socceroos began the campaign with a 2-0 win over Turkiye before suffering a 2-0 defeat to hosts USA in the last game. A draw would be enough for Tony Popovic’s side to qualify in the Round of 32. Despite being tied on points, they are ahead of Paraguay in goal difference.
La Albirroja held Turkey scoreless from 32 shots while playing with 10 men for over 45 minutes. After suffering a 4-1 defeat to the USA in the opening game, everybody wrote off Paraguay, but the South American outfit stood tall against a star-studded Turkish attack to win the game narrowly by 1-0
This is set to be a closely contested fixture, with key player battles determining the outcome. Will Australia’s offensive setup manage to beat the resolute defensive backline of Paraguay, or will the La Albirroja get the better of the Australians? We shall find that out soon.
5. Matias Galarza vs Jacob Italiano
This will be an interesting midfield battle in the wings. Galarza’s 64-second strike against Turkiye was the earliest winning goal in World Cup history. The River Plate midfielder is coming after an excellent loan spell in the MLS with Atalanta United. He will prioritise dynamic flank coverage against Australia.
Italiano will need to step up for his side as Leckie’s presence upfront seems doubtful. The 24 year old has plied his trade with Borussia Monnchengladbach reserves before finding his new home in Austrian top flight with Grazer AK.
4. Diego Gomez vs Aiden O’Neill
The Brighton and Hove Albion lad will act as the high-intensity counter-pressing engine for Paraguay, who will look to physically crowd O’Neill in the central third to quickly switch to transition plays as the Australian defence and midfield were badly exposed during frequent counterattacks against the USA.
Moreover, Gomez was even praised by Messi during his time in MLS with Inter Miami. A League Champion with Melbourne City, O’Neill is brilliant in keeping possession and moving the ball smoothly. Moreover, he knows American conditions better as he plays for New York City in the MLS.
3. Omar Alderete vs Mohamed Toure

Even Turkiye’s star studded attacking lineup failed to get the better of Omar Alderete, who is arguably the finest defender in Paraguay’s squad. He will deploy an aggressive, proactive style of defence to stop Toure. He faces the best strikers week in and week out in the English Premier League.
The Norwich City striker had a pretty poor outing in the last game against the USA, where he had just one shot on target. In high-stakes games like these, Popovic would expect Toure to step up and lead his team’s attacking lineup.
2. Harry Souttar vs Julio Enciso
Souttar was brilliant against Turkiye in the opening game, but failed to contain American strikers in the last game. Soutar is coming after a tough season with Leicester City, after they got relegated to EFL League One. He is a towering presence in the defence, who excels at marshalling his penalty box
The Strasbourg midfielder set up Gallarza for that early winning goal against Turkiye in the last game. He has two assists to his name so far. He is the chief creative engine of Paraguay, who was directly responsible for both the goals Paraguay has scored so far.
1. Isidro Pitta vs Alessandro Circati
This player battle might well define the fate of the game. Circatti, the Parma defender, competes in the Italian top flight and is known for his robustness in defence. It is very difficult to beat him in the air as he makes those brilliant aerial clearances and doesn’t get involved in reckless challenges.
The RB Bragantino striker has not been in the finest of form so far. But in a must-win game for Paraguay, Gustavo Alfaro will hope to see Pitta rising to the occasion to find his name in the scoresheet. His upper body strength to hold up play and act as the physical focal point up front.
