Five key player battles to watch during Qatar vs Switzerland FIFA World Cup 2026 clash

These sides are placed in Group B.

The Qatar national football team are all set to have a face-off against the Switzerland national football team for their opening game at the 2026 FIFA World Cup. This is going to be an interesting contest to watch, taking place at the San Francisco Bay Area Stadium.

The Maroon Ones will be on the grandest stage of football for the second time in their history. Their performances in the recent international friendlies ahead of the World Cup were not up to the mark. They first faced a defeat against Ireland and were then held to a draw by El Salvador. Led by Julen Lopetegui, the Qatar national football team are going to be under pressure for their opening game.

The Nati have put in decent performances before setting foot on the biggest stage of them all. They secured a dominant win against Jordan but were held to a draw by Australia in their final friendly before the FIFA World Cup 2026.

This does not mean that they have a weak squad, but they were unable to put on the best show. Murat Yakin’s Switzerland national football team will be looking to begin their campaign with a win and are hence going to have trouble with Qatar.

Top 5 Key Battles

5. Gregor Kobel vs Meshaal Barsham

This is going to be a battle between the shot stoppers. Gregor Kobel competes in an elite European league and Meshaal Barsham is considered one of the best in the Asian region.

Kobel has a good command of his penalty box and will also be crucial for Switzerland’s buildup play. Barsham is not as tall as the Swiss goalkeeper, but is quick and a strong stopper of the ball.

4. Akram Afif vs Silvan Widmer

The 29-year-old Akram Afif is a highly creative player for the Qatar national football team. From the left flank, he can come on to score goals and is also good at creating plays for his fellow teammates. He is going to battle it out with Switzerland’s right-back Silvan Widmer, who will be constantly ready to deny Afif from entering the final third.

3. Boualem Khoukhi vs Breel Embolo

Boualem Khoukhi is going to be an important part of the backline for the Maroon Ones. With his discipline, he will be looking to take a strong fight with the Swiss attack. Breel Embolo, with his fast pace, is going to cause problems for the Qatari defence. He can be an aerial threat for the opponents, making him hard to contain in the final third.

2. Almoez Ali vs Manuel Akanji

Almoez Ali will be eager to threaten Switzerland’s defence from time to time. He can score goals with his good positioning in the final third, but will he be able to get past Manuel Akanji?

The 30-year-old is the backbone of the Switzerland national football team in the backline. He is physically strong and recovers the ball well.

1. Granit Xhaka vs Hassan Al-Haydos

Bayern Munich vs Bayer Leverkusen

The veteran midfielders will be locking horns on the grandest stage of them all. Hassan Al-Haydos is good at creating chances for his fellow teammates, but Granit Xhaka, with his ball-winning skills, is going to give a hard time to the 35-year-old Qatari midfielder. Xhaka can play deep with the defence and can also launch long balls, but Al Haydos, with his clever positioning, can spoil things for Switzerland.

When will Switzerland play their first match of FIFA World Cup 2026?

They are set to face Qatar on June 13.

Who will Qatar face in group stage of FIFA World Cup 2026?
