Top five players with most free-kick goals scored in single Premier League season ft. Szoboszlai, Beckham & more

Szoboszlai could set a great new record with his free-kick goals this season.

Some very classic goals have come from free kicks in the Premier League. Almost every football fan will have at least one standout performance that comes to mind.

The tremendous technical skill, or great power, involved makes them unique. Getting the ball past a wall of players is all well and good, but having the speed and precision to beat a top-tier goalkeeper? Thatโ€™s a whole different story.

In these kinds of circumstances, certain players simply seem to have the โ€˜magical touch.โ€™ With this, we take a look at the top five players with the most free-kick goals scored in a single Premier League season.

Five players with the most free-kick goals scored in a single Premier League season

5. James Ward-Prowse: 4 (2020/21)

Even though he hasnโ€™t scored from a free kick in the league since February 2023, James Ward-Prowse seems to be one of the few players whose opposition clubsโ€™ supporters actually dread when he is standing over a dead ball within thirty yards of the goal. However, before that year, he had demonstrated an efficiency that most players could only imagine.

During the 2020/21 season, Ward-Prowse netted four free kicks, more than any other player that season. He found a place in the record of most dead-ball goals in a single league season.

4. James Ward-Prowse: 4 (2021/22)

It was astonishing to watch Ward-Prowse return the next season with the same clinical ability from the set piece. The player recreated the exact number of free-kick goals in the 2021-22 season. He recorded four set-piece goals, equalling his own record.

3. Dominik Szoboszlai: 4 (2025/26)

With his fourth free-kick of the season, Dominik Szoboszlai is getting closer to a Premier League landmark. In the 1-1 draw at Anfield against Tottenham Hotspur, the Liverpool midfielder lined up to bag the first goal by looping an effort past Guglielmo Vicario.

Szoboszlaiโ€™s free-kick was his fourth in the Premier League this campaign. He now stands just two free-kicks shy of eclipsing players like David Beckham and Laurent Robert in terms of the most free-kick goals scored in a single Premier League season.

2. Laurent Robert: 5 (2001/02)

In 2000โ€“01, Beckham and Laurent Robert became the only two players to score five direct free-kick goals in only one Premier League season. In 2001โ€“02, he scored five goals for Newcastle, which helped them end the season in fourth place.

Robert was well-known for the force he could produce with his shots; most of his goals from free kicks came from rockets made with his left foot.

1. David Beckham: 5 (2001/02)

Most people wonโ€™t be surprised to learn that David Beckham has bagged the most goals from direct free-kicks in Premier League history (18). The former Manchester United player scored 18 set-piece goals from direct free-kicks in 265 games across nine Premier League seasons. It is undoubtedly the skill for which Beckham was most famous, coupled with his ability to cross.

In his initial two campaigns as a Premier League player, Beckham failed to score a single free-kick goal. His first came for Manchester United in their 6-3 loss to Southampton on October 26, 1996, which is undoubtedly one of the teamโ€™s most notorious Premier League defeats.

How many free kicks does Dominik Szoboszlai need to overtake Beckhamโ€™s record?
