Brazil drew their opening game 1-1 against Morocco

As an exciting and action-packed opening match week of the 2026 FIFA World Cup comes to an end, the qualification scenarios across the groups are beginning to take shape. With only three group-stage matches available to secure progression, every point has become crucial as teams battle for a place in the knockout rounds.

Brazil, who are coming off a 1-1 draw against African champions Morocco, know that a victory in their next match would significantly strengthen their chances of qualifying ahead of a potentially decisive final group-stage encounter against Scotland. The Selecao will face Haiti in their second Group C fixture, a match that they simply cannot afford to lose against a side considered weaker on paper.

The Haitian National Team, meanwhile, entered the game after a narrow 1-0 defeat to Scotland in their opening match. It was a contest in which they created enough opportunities to come away with a positive result, but ultimately paid the price for their lack of clinical finishing. While Haiti are expected to put up a strong fight, Brazil’s superior quality could prove too much for them to handle.

Here are five players to watch when these two sides meet at Philadelphia Stadium in Pennsylvania, USA, on June 19.

5. Ricardo Ade

Ricardo Ade remains the most experienced defender in the current Haiti setup and will be a vital figure if his side are to secure a positive result. The veteran centre-back appears to be strong in aerial duels and continues to use his experience effectively when making tackles, interceptions, and defensive recoveries.

At 36 years of age, Ade is naturally more comfortable defending in a deeper block, where his positioning and game intelligence can compensate for any decline in pace. He remains highly effective when dealing with crosses and tracking attacking movements inside the penalty area. However, a potential battle against a mobile false nine, such as Cunha, could present a unique challenge.

4. Lucas Paqueta

Lucas Paquetá is arguably the creative heartbeat of Brazil’s midfield and one of the few players capable of consistently unlocking opposition defences with line-breaking passes through the centre of the pitch. While he struggled to make a significant impact against Morocco, his quality on the ball remains unquestionable.

Paqueta’s ability to play line-breaking passes could be particularly important against a defensively organised Haiti side. The former West Ham United midfielder is also dangerous from set-pieces and possesses the intelligence to drift into wide areas, where he can deliver crosses and create overloads. His versatility could provide Brazil with several attacking solutions against a compact defensive structure.

3. Matheus Cunha

Despite being left out of the starting lineup in Brazil’s opening game, Matheus Cunha made a positive impact after coming off the bench and appeared to suit Brazil’s style of play better than Igor Thiago. The Manchester United forward could prove to be a potential X-factor in Brazil’s attack, not only through his own contributions but also by bringing his teammates into the game.

Cunha is coming off the back of an excellent domestic season and possesses the unpredictability that can trouble any defence. He combines pace, physicality, and aerial ability while also offering tactical flexibility. Unlike a traditional striker, Cunha is comfortable drifting into wide areas, allowing players such as Vinicius Junior and Raphinha to move into more central positions. His movement could be a key weapon against a compact Haitian defence.

With Carlo Ancelotti seemingly reluctant to start or regularly use Endrick, Cunha may be the best available option to lead the line against Haiti.

2. Frantzdy Pierrot

Frantzdy Pierrot is a classic number nine who thrives inside the penalty area and remains one of the most important attacking players in the Haitian NT setup. While he may not always be the standout performer at the club level, his contributions for Haiti have consistently made him one of the team’s primary attacking threats.

Pierrot uses intelligent movement to drift away from defenders and is particularly dangerous in the air. His ability to attack crosses and convert chances inside the box makes him a constant threat whenever Haiti enters the final third. Although he lacks the pace and dribbling ability in quick transitions, Pierrot compensates with his hold-up play and physical presence, as he can bring teammates into attacking moves.

1. Vinicius Junior

Vinicius Junior was arguably Brazil’s best attacking player in the opening match against Morocco. Up against one of the world’s finest full-backs in Achraf Hakimi, the Brazilian winger still managed to create several dangerous moments and looked threatening throughout the game.

Under Carlo Ancelotti, Vinicius appears far more comfortable and confident than he has often looked for the national team in previous years. He is beginning to replicate the performances that have made him one of the best players in world football at club level.

Against a Haitian side expected to sit deep and defend in numbers, Vinicius’ blistering pace may not be as decisive as usual. However, his dribbling ability, close control, and creativity in tight spaces could be crucial in breaking down a stubborn defensive block. With players such as Mbappe, Haaland, and Messi already making headlines in the Golden Boot race, Vinicius will also be eager to get on the scoresheet and enter the conversation himself.
