These five players could prove decisive when Canada and Qatar meet in a crucial Group B clash.

The battle for qualification in Group B remains wide open heading into the second round of fixtures. Canada and Qatar both began their FIFA World Cup 2026 campaigns with draws, leaving little room for error as the competition intensifies.

While Canada were held by Bosnia and Herzegovina, Qatar earned a valuable point against Switzerland, ensuring that all four teams in the group remain firmly in contention for a place in the knockout rounds.

As a result, this fixture carries enormous significance. A victory would place either side in a strong position ahead of the final group-stage match, while defeat could leave their World Cup ambitions hanging by a thread.

With so much at stake, individual quality may ultimately determine which nation takes a crucial step towards the Round of 32. Here are five players who could have the biggest influence on the outcome.

5. Cyle Larin (Canada)

Experience often becomes invaluable during major tournaments, and that’s what Cyle Larin has proven. The forward once again demonstrated his importance by scoring Canada’s equaliser against Bosnia and Herzegovina in the opening fixture. His goal not only rescued a point but also highlighted his ability to make an impact when his team needs him most.

Larin has spent much of his career delivering goals for club and country, building a reputation as a forward who thrives in high-pressure situations. His physical presence, aerial ability and intelligent positioning provide Canada with a different attacking dimension alongside Jonathan David.

4. Ismaël Koné (Canada)

While Canada’s forwards often draw the headlines, Ismaël Koné plays an equally important role in connecting all areas of the team. The midfielder currently plays for Sassuolo in Serie A and has rapidly developed into one of Canada’s most influential young players.

During the 2025-26 campaign, Koné contributed five goals and six assists while continuing to impress with his ability to carry the ball through midfield. Koné also featured at the 2022 FIFA World Cup as one of the youngest members of the Canadian squad.

Since then, his development has accelerated significantly, making him a vital figure in Jesse Marsch’s system. His energy, passing range and ability to break opposition lines could be crucial against a Qatar side expected to remain organised and compact.

3. Almoez Ali (Qatar)

Qatar’s all-time leading goalscorer remains one of the most respected forwards in Asian football. Almoez Ali continues to represent Al Duhail and enjoyed another productive domestic season, registering 17 goals and seven assists across all competitions. Although he began Qatar’s opening match against Switzerland on the bench, his influence on the national team remains significant.

Ali was one of Qatar’s headline names during the 2022 FIFA World Cup and has consistently delivered goals throughout qualification campaigns and continental tournaments. His movement inside the penalty area and instinctive finishing make him a constant threat whenever opportunities arise. Whether he starts or is introduced later in the match, Canada will need to remain vigilant whenever Ali is involved.

2. Akram Afif (Qatar)

Whenever Qatar need inspiration, Akram Afif is usually the player they turn to. The Al Sadd forward remains one of Asia’s finest footballers and enters this fixture following another outstanding campaign in the Qatar Stars League. During the 2025-26 season, Afif contributed 23 goals and 18 assists across all competitions, once again highlighting his importance to club and country.

Afif featured prominently during Qatar’s appearance at the 2022 FIFA World Cup and has since established himself as the face of the national team. His performances were instrumental in Qatar’s AFC Asian Cup triumphs, and he remains their most creative attacking player.

Capable of creating chances from seemingly impossible situations, Afif has the quality to change the course of a match with a single moment of brilliance.

1. Jonathan David (Canada)

Canada’s hopes of reaching the knockout rounds will once again rely heavily on the shoulders of Jonathan David. The striker enjoyed another productive season in European football with Juventus, scoring 25 goals and providing six assists across all competitions during the 2025-26 campaign. His consistency in front of goal has established him as one of the most dangerous forwards in international football and Canada’s all-time leading goalscorer.

David was part of the Canadian squad that featured at the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar, gaining valuable experience despite the team’s group-stage exit. Four years later, he arrives at the tournament as a more complete and mature player, expected to lead Canada’s attacking charge. His movement, finishing ability and composure under pressure make him the player Qatar’s defence will be most concerned about.
