Can Germany’s star-studded offensive lineup manage to beat the robust Paraguayan defence?

Boston Stadium in the United States of America gears up to host the Round of 32 fixtures of the FIFA World Cup 2026, where four-time champions Germany and South American outfit Paraguay lock horns in what is set to be a thrilling contest.

Germany kick-started the tournament with a 7-1 win over Curacao. In the next game, Deniz Undav scored a brace against the Ivory Coast to seal the top spot. Nagelsmann’s side succumbed to a 2-1 defeat against Ecuador in their last game, finishing the group stage with six points.

After a devastating 4-1 defeat to the USA in the opening game, Paraguay shocked the world by defeating Türkiye with just 10 men. Gustavo Alfaro’s men drew their last game against Australia and qualified as one of the best third-ranked teams for the FIFA World Cup knockout stages.

On football’s grandest stage, ninety minutes can transform great players into national heroes. This highly anticipated showdown promises a tactical war, but the outcome rests on the boots of a few special individuals. In this article, we shall take a look at the top five players to keep an eye on.

5. Manuel Neuer (Germany)

Germany haven’t kept a World Cup clean sheet since the 2014 final against Argentina. Nine straight matches, conceding goals, and Neuer, unfortunately, has been between the sticks in the majority of the games. Neuer is making his fifth World Cup appearance and would be keen to get a crucial clean sheet against Paraguay.

In terms of age, he is two years older than Germany’s gaffer Nagelsmann. The Bayern Munich goalkeeper brings a lot of experience to the side and is also the lone remaining survivor of the 2014 World Cup-winning squad.

4. Diego Gomez (Paraguay)

Lionel Messi hailed the Brighton midfielder as one of South America’s most complete modern midfield prospects during their time together in Inter Miami. Gomez has extensive experience playing in the States, in Major League Soccer, before making a high-profile switch to Brighton and Hove Albion.

Gomez maps out opposition passing lines beautifully and is also the absolute tactical heartbeat of Gustavo Alfaro’s side, who must step up and help Paraguay dominate those pocket-sized midfield battles against some of the finest midfielders in world football.

3. Florian Wirtz (Germany)

The Liverpool winger has been one of the top performers for Germany so far. He started in all three games for Nagelsmann’s side and also gave 2 assists. It was a lovely little layoff from Liverpool ace Wirtz, who set up Nmecha well to score Germany’s first goal in the World Cup.

He even gave an assist to Leroy Sane in the first few minutes of the last game against Ecuador. The fastest goalscorer in the history of the German national team, Wirtz is the creative architect of the team. He will be tasked with the responsibility of creating chances from the left flank.

2. Julio Enciso (Paraguay)

Enciso showed early signs of greatness when he played a pivotal role in helping the Paraguay U23 side make it to the quarterfinals of the Paris 2024 Olympics. A highly passionate chess enthusiast, the Strasbourg striker is one of the most technically sound players in the team.

Enciso excels when isolated against a fullback, and he will be up against one of the world-class fullbacks, Joshua Kimmich. The former Brighton and Ipswich prodigy gave a crucial assist to Galarza in the opening few minutes of the game to win the match against a star-studded Turkish outfit.

1. Kai Havertz (Germany)

The Arsenal striker has been in spectacular form for Nagelmann’s side. He scored a brace against Curacao in the opening game but has failed to find the back of the net in the last two games. He came very close to winning his second UEFA Champions League with two different London teams.

Havertz had just one shot on target in the last game against Ecuador, and he will need to unleash his beast to unlock a robust Paraguayan defence, boasting Sunderland defender Omar Alderete. Paraguay has been solid defensively in the last two games, keeping two out of two clean sheets.
