Portugal and Uzbekistan are facing each other for the first time at the FIFA World Cup.

Portugal are undoubtedly one of the strongest and most star-studded teams in the 2026 FIFA World Cup. However, they performed poorly against DR Congo in their tournament opener, raising concerns about the team’s future in the summer competition.

Seleção das Quinas dominated the game in possession as they took seven shots while having 29 touches in the opposition box. However, their expected goals (0.65 xG) were less than DR Congo’s (0.87 xG). Joao Neves scored to break the deadlock for Portugal, which was later equalised by Yoane Wissa.

Portugal’s captain, Cristiano Ronaldo, was expected to show his flair in the opening game against the Leopards, but he failed to meet the expectations. The Al-Nassr attacker had 25 touches as he took the most shots in the game, three. However, all his shots were off target, and he also did not create any scoring opportunities.

However, Seleção das Quinas’ attack looked lacklustre against DR Congo, while a few defensive lapses were also visible. Before their second game, they are expected to make all the necessary changes and play more exciting, free-flowing football.

Pedro Neto and Bruno Fernandes will continue to support him from the midfield. Paris Saint-Germain (PSG) teammates João Neves and Vitinha will support the team’s framework by building scoring opportunities and also supporting the defence.

Ruben Dias will make his much-awaited return in the Portuguese line-up. Meanwhile, João Cancelo and Nuno Mendes will continue playing as full-backs. As expected, Diogo Costa will keep the gloves with him.
