Portugal vs DR Congo: Five key battles to watch out for FIFA World Cup 2026

Portugal will be the favourites to top Group K in the FIFA World Cup 2026
Cristiano Ronaldo and his Portugal side have arrived in Miami and are all set to begin their FIFA World Cup 2026 campaign. Os Navegadores face the DR Congo in their first game of the tournament, as the African side will be there to register a historic upset on Wednesday.
As we get closer to kickoff, here are five key battles that could decide the Group K game between Portugal and DR Congo:

5. Ruben Dias vs Yoane Wissa
This battle on the pitch between Portugal’s most experienced defender and DR Congo’s striker would be make or break for the African side. Unlike Portugal, Les Leopards don’t have many premier goal-scoring options, and hence, Yoane Wissa is their best bet.
If Ruben Dias manages to keep the Newcastle United player quiet, Portugal will be relaxed throughout the game.
4. Pedro Neto vs Aaron Wan-Bissaka
Another big Premier League battle on the pitch would be between Chelsea’s Pedro Neto and West Ham’s Aaron Wan-Bissaka. Neto has had a decent season with the Blues, contributing 13 goals and 10 assists in all competitions.
Aaron Wan-Bissaka, on the other hand, has become a mainstay for DR Congo since switching his nationality in 2025 to help the African side qualify for the World Cup. If the West Ham player manages to keep Neto quiet, he could cut off a major goalscoring supply towards Ronaldo in attack.
3. Bruno Fernandes vs Noah Sadiki
Sunderland’s Noah Sadiki will have his work cut out against Bruno Fernandes, and his team will be relying on the midfielder to put up a huge shift. Bruno is coming off a wonderful season on a personal level, having set the Premier League record for assists in a season.
The Portuguese midfielder also scored a wonder goal in the friendly match against Chile earlier this month, making Noah Sadiki’s role even more important. The Sunderland player had a decent debut season in England in his own right, and his nation will be hoping for something similar in the FIFA World Cup 2026.
2. Vitinha vs Ngal Ayel Mukau
Vitinha is arguably the best Portuguese national team player in terms of form over the last two seasons. Having won back-to-back UEFA Champions League titles, the midfielder’s confidence will be sky high.
Standing opposite to Vitinha, Ngal Ayel Mukau will have a similar role in DR Congo’s midfield. The 21-year-old represents Lille in Ligue 1 and has gained significant experience during the 2025-26 season. But will Mukau be able to keep Vitinha quiet? As this could decide which midfield dictates the pace of the game.
1. Cristiano Ronaldo vs Chancel Mbemba

Lacing his boots for his sixth and last World Cup, Cristiano Ronaldo is the oldest outfield player in the FIFA World Cup 2026. While CR7 is no longer at the peak of his powers, he is still lethal in the box, and this was evident in Al Nassr’s Saudi Pro League-winning campaign.
DR Congo’s captain and centre-back, Chancel Mbemba, on the other hand, is currently playing for Lille and has a wealth of experience, having previously represented Marseille, Porto, and Newcastle United.
Knowing Cristiano’s goalscoring prowess, this captain vs captain tussle will arguably be the decider of the game.
