The Maroons need to win tonight’s match to have a shot at qualifying for the knockouts.
Qatar take on Bosnia and Herzegovina in their final Group B match in the ongoing FIFA World Cup 2026 at Lumen Field in Seattle on June 24. The Maroons sit at the bottom of the group with just a solitary point and a goal difference of -6, and face an uphill battle to stay in contention for qualification.
The hosts of the 2022 edition made a bright start to their campaign, clinching a surprising 1-1 draw against Switzerland in their opener. Despite being on the back foot for most of the contest and conceding early via Breel Embolo’s penalty, they fought back and got the equaliser after an own goal from Miro Muheim in added time.
However, any morale boost from that result evaporated as the Maroons were thrashed 6-0 by Canada in their second group game. The Middle Eastern nation were woeful throughout the game and were reduced to nine men after red cards for Homam Ahmed and Assim Madibo.
The result has left Julen Lopetegui’s men on the brink of elimination. Not only do they need to beat Bosnia and Herzegovina in tonight’s match, but they also need Switzerland to lose to Canada in the other Group B clash and hope that Qatar finish over the Swiss on goal difference.

Qatar (4-3-3): Mahmud Abunada; Pedro Miguel, Issa Laye, Boualem Khoukhi, Sultan Al-Brake; Jassem Gaber, Ahmed Fathy, Karim Boudiaf; Edmilson Junior, Akram Afif, Hassan Al-Haydos.

Thoughts on the lineup
Despite conceding six goals against Canada, goalkeeper Mahmud Abunada made four big saves and will keep his place between the sticks. The experienced Sultan Al-Brake starts at left-back. Pedro ‘Ro-Ro’ Miguel, who played the last two matches in the middle, slots in at right-back. Boualem Khoukhi is joined by Issa Laye as tonight’s centre-back pairing.
Lopetegui has shaken up his midfield a bit, especially with Madibo suspended. The Spanish head coach opted for three defensive-minded players in his midfield – Jassim Gaber, Ahmed Fathy, and Karim Boudiaf – who will be tasked with breaking up the Bosnian attacks.
Akram Afif, who is his nation’s third-highest goalscorer, is yet to find the back of the net in this FIFA World Cup. However, he keeps his place as the lone striker. Edmilson Junior starts on the right flank and is joined by Hassan Al-Haydos on the left.
