The Los Blancos closed the roof against Manchester City

For tonight’s El Clasico, Santiago Bernabeu’s roof will be closed. Earlier, in an attempt to create a more exciting environment for Tuesday’s Champions League quarterfinal first-leg matchup against the Premier League team, Real Madrid requested permission from UEFA to play Manchester City under a covered roof at the Santiago Bernabéu.

For the third straight season, City—who won their first Champions League title the previous year—will play Madrid in the league. Despite the 1-1 draw at the end of the game, Los Blancos went on to win the match 4-3 at Eithad thanks to penalties.

In the Sunday El Clasico against Barcelona at the Bernabeu at 3 pm ET, Real Madrid could almost clinch a 36th LaLiga championship.

The timing of the affair is noteworthy given Real Madrid are enjoying a victory over Manchester City in the UEFA Champions League quarterfinals, while Barcelona lost badly to Paris Saint-Germain a day earlier.

Barça enters this match fresh off yet another European humiliation, having let their best chance of qualifying for the Final in years to disappear in spectacular fashion as the Catalans took the lead, went down to 10 men, faltered in the second half and lost by a significant margin once more in what is now a yearly ritual of continental catastrophes.

After Ronald Araujo was sent off early at Camp Nou and Barcelona lost 4-1 to Les Parisiens, the team wasted a first-leg lead over PSG.

With seven games remaining in the season, Barca trails Real Madrid by eight points. This will be Xavi’s final season as head coach of the Blaugrana. The season has seen no titles thus far.

After defeating Barcelona in the Spanish Super Cup and qualifying for a second Champions League Final, Real is still in the running for a treble. This is a unique opportunity to win three Clasicos in a single season with a 2-1 victory in La Liga action at Camp Nou.

With 13 goals and 8 assists, Robert Lewandowski is leading the Blaugranas in league goal contributions. Raphinha and Ilkay Gundogan, two Premier League arrivals, are in second and third, respectively.

The team’s top players this season have been Frenkie de Jong and Gundogan, with Pedri, Lamine Yamal, and Joao Felix also making waves in the attack and youthful sensation Pau Cubarsi standing out in the back. Young sensations Alejandro Balde and Gavi have missed 22 and 36 games for Barca, respectively.
