Football’s fiercest and fabled rivalry goes by the name of El Clasico, where two of the most successful sides in Spanish football lock horns against each other. This is not just a ninety-minute affair; rather, this match potentially has historical, political, social and geopolitical significance in the European subcontinent and worldwide.

From Luis Figo’s controversial transfer to Madrid’s infamous 11-1 win, this is one of the most happening rivalries in club football. This fixture has featured some of the most decorated players ever to play this game. From Ballon d’Or winners to World Champions, we take a look at the elite eleven players to make it to our all-time El Clásico combined XI.

All-time El Clasico Combined XI (Formation: 4-3-3)

GK – Iker Casillas (Real Madrid)

Iker Casillas, or as he is popularly nicknamed, “San Iker”, unarguably is considered to be one of the greatest goalkeepers of all time. He is one of the very rare and few players ever to feature in over 1000 matches in his career. Born in Mostoles, Spain, Casillas is an epitome of unwavering loyalty and dedication.

After rising through the ranks of Real Madrid‘s youth setup, he plied his trade with the reserves side before gaining a promotion to the senior team. What makes him special in this clash is that he has spent around 16 seasons with Los Blancos and faced multiple generations of Barca legends from Rivaldo, Ronaldinho, Messi and Xavi.

His extraordinary leadership skills in marshalling the team’s defence to maintain calm and composure even during the heated Mourinho-Guardiola era make him a legendary figure in this fixture.

RB – Dani Alves (FC Barcelona)

No full-back in this fixture’s history has contributed more assists than Dani Alves. The Brazilian maestro has completely redefined the full-back position. One of the cornerstone players during Pep Guardiola‘s reign at Camp Nou, Alves had been instrumental for Barcelona over these decades.

His chemistry with Lionel Messi on the right flank was truly a delight to watch. His overlapping runs and pinpoint crosses allowed Messi to move a bit centrally and play the False Number 9 position. He emerged as a big-match player and neutralised threats from greats such as Angel Di Maria and Cristiano Ronaldo over the years.

CB – Sergio Ramos (Real Madrid)

The El Clasico is not for the faint-hearted, as Sergio Ramos truly lives by this phrase. Madrid’s defensive general, Sergio Ramos, has been instrumental in bringing four UCL titles and five LaLiga titles to Santiago Bernabeu. What makes Ramos rare is his fearlessness while facing some of the greatest strikers.

From Lionel Messi, Neymar, Luis Suarez, Antoine Griezmann and many more, Ramos was capable of breaking their rhythm with his last-ditch tackles and brute force. He was also known as a clutch player who was never afraid to push forward to score crucial headers for his side. His famous winner against Barca in the 2013 El Clasico still haunts the Culer loyalists.

CB – Ronald Koeman (FC Barcelona)

Personifying Barcelona’s ideology of Total Football Heritage, the current gaffer of the Netherlands national team was a nightmare for Real Madrid strikers during his playing days. He is one of the greatest goal-scoring defenders in El Clasico history with his clinical finishing and shooting skills.

He revolutionised the Sweeper Role and influenced both the buildup & the scoreboard. Koeman’s tackles were calculated, unshakable and poised. His performance was crucial in Barca’s dominance in the early 90s.

His legacy in the El Clasico goes beyond a player, as he is one of the few players to play, score and manage in an El Clasico fixture.

LB – Marcelo (Real Madrid)

Marcelo redefined the role of a full-back by blending Brazilian Samba energy and Madridista’s warrior spirit. One of the most decorated full-backs in this fixture, Marcelo won six LaLiga titles and five UEFA Champions League titles with Real Madrid.

His flexibility to switch positions into a third midfielder and operate as a left winger allowed Cristiano Ronaldo to play flamboyantly. He has performed consistently over these years and has emerged as a clutch player with unflinching confidence like a street fighter with ballet shoes.

CM – Andres Iniesta (FC Barcelona)

The heartbeat of the Spanish golden generation, Andres Iniesta, has been the calm in the storm for FC Barcelona over these years. He orchestrated the Barca midfield formed by the holy trinity alongside Xavi and Sergio Busquets. His genius and technical brilliance was even acknowledged by his rivals when he received a standing ovation at the Santiago Bernabeu.

He is also one of the most successful dribblers in this fixture, and also the only midfielder to assist in four consecutive El Clasico games. His statistics speak volumes about his greatness, and his performances over these years have turned title races in Barca’s favour.

CM – Luka Modric (Real Madrid)

No non-Spanish midfielder has made more appearances in an El Clasico fixture than Luka Modric. From Jose Mourinho to Carlo Ancelotti, Modric has been a reliable figure during different reigns. His blend of defensive work rate and progressive playmaking makes him an indispensable player in this lineup.

During Barca’s peak tiki-taka days, Modric never left his calm composure and consistently delivered accurate passes and orchestrated his team’s midfield like a pro. He has defied age and time. Even today, when Madrid requires a moment of magic and brilliance, Carlo Ancelotti looks up to none other than the Croatian legend.

CM – Xavi (FC Barcelona)

Xavi is a legendary figure in the Spanish footballing circuit. One of the greatest midfielders of all time, Xavi joined La Masia at a young age of 11, and the rest is history. He is one of the first players to feature in over 150 European and FIFA Club World Cup games for the Catalonia-based outfit.

The Barcelona legend won eight LaLiga titles and four UCL titles during his two-decade-long tenure at Camp Nou. In the theatre of El Clasico, it seemed as if Xavi wasn’t just a performer, he was a composer. His brilliance turned the most dominating fixtures into a training ground for total football.

The Blaugrana midfielder also managed El Clasico games after he took over the reins of Camp Nou as their gaffer.

RW – Lionel Messi (FC Barcelona)

The all-time top goalscorer in El Clasico history, Lionel Messi, has netted the most number of goals in this fixture. Apart from that, he is also one of the leading assist providers of all time in El Clasico, showcasing his selflessness and ability to support his team.

Every time, the little master from Rosario played for Barca, he symbolised La Masia excellence against Real Madrid’s galactico glamour. He gave Barca a footballing identity, and his name will forever be etched in golden letters in FC Barcelona’s Hall of Fame.

ST – Ronaldo (FC Barcelona & Real Madrid)

Ronaldo, or as he is popularly nicknamed, “O Fenomeno” has been an influential figure. The recipient of the Ballon d’Or twice and the FIFA World Player of the Year thrice, Ronaldo has been a cornerstone for both FC Barcelona and Real Madrid.

He was at his physical peak during his time at Camp Nou, scoring 47 goals in just 49 games in all competitions during the 1996-97 season. After his stint with Inter Milan, he switched sides to Real Madrid in 2002. He was part of the Galacticos era and won the 2002-03 edition of the LaLiga with Los Blancos.

LW – Cristiano Ronaldo (Real Madrid)

The ruthless emperor of El Clasico warfare, Cristiano Ronaldo, had been one of the worst nightmares for Barca fans at Camp Nou. From scoring spectacular goals in hostile territory, whether it be an overhead volley or a solo breakaway finish, Ronaldo has done it all. He scored more goals in Camp Nou than many forwards did in a lifetime for FC Barcelona.

He avenged Messi’s shirtless celebration at the Bernabeu by mirroring his celebration after a thunderous strike at Camp Nou. Ronaldo has redefined El Clasico, and his rivalry with Lionel Messi added a whole new dimension and excitement to this fixture.
