Former players who are now coaches are on this list as well

Football is the most popular sport in the world. And whatever thing is popular in the real world tends to attract money. And here we are talking about a lot of money. There was a time when footballers were paid pennies in comparison to modern football wages. An average footballer in the Premier League is a millionaire now. But did you know their world football managers aren’t far behind?

Managing top talents is not a joke and neither a walk in the park. A manager is expected to make quick decisions on and off the field to work year-round with the lot of players he has at his disposal. Managers are also worth a lot nowadays. In this article, we go through a top 10 list of richest football managers.

10. Carlo Ancelotti – $80 million

The Italian manager has a different state of mind altogether. Unlike many other colleagues in the profession, he rarely shouts or is aggressive on the touchline. Carlo Ancelotti’s calmness no wonder works magic. He is 64 years old now and has already brought Real Madrid once again to the quarter-finals of the UEFA Champions League this season. Ancelotti has lifted four UCL titles already.

9. Rafael Benítez – $80 million

The Spaniard is not currently on the payroll of any club but surely has a very good net worth. Just last month Rafael Benítez was relieved from the duties of managing Celta de Vigo after a rather unsuccessful eight months at the helm. Benítez is 63 years old now and had helped Liverpool to win the 2004-05 UCL title. A year earlier he had won the World’s Best Club Coach title while with Valencia CF.

8. Jürgen Klopp – $80 million

Jürgen Norbert Klopp is currently the head coach of the Reds in the PL. Klopp has been on the Anfield touchlines since 2015. Two months ago he had made his decision public of deciding to quit his current job after the end of this season. Currently, his side is in a tight three-way battle with Arsenal and Man City for the league title. Any better way to end a legacy than winning the league title?

7. Antonio Conte – $90 million

Since “Tottenham’s story is this — 20 years there is this owner and they never won something — why?” words after the game against Southampton, Antonio Conte hasn’t been active. That was back in March 2023 when Conte last managed Tottenham Hotspurs in the PL. Still, the 54-year-old has had a successful career to date. And his net worth goes to speak truly about that.

6. Fabio Cannavaro – $100 million

Born in Napoli, Italy, Fabio Cannavaro won the 2006 FIFA World Cup and Ballon d’Or that year as a player. Clearly, the centre-back had a successful playing career. In the managerial lane, Cannavaro last managed Benevento Calcio back in February 2023. He has also managed the likes of Al Nassr previously. Both his playing days and managerial paychecks put his worth estimate at around $100 million.

5. Zinedine Zidane – $120 million

A world-class midfielder in his playing days and later a game-changing manager. In just his first half-season with Real Madrid as a coach, Zinedine Zidane guided them to the 2016 UCL title. And later added two more in successive seasons like it was a piece of cake. Zidane is valued at around $120 million.

4. José Mourinho – $120 million

Just two months back the Portuguese super manager was reported to be learning German. It was in connection that he was supposedly trying to grab the FC Bayern Munich job.

After two and half years with AS Roma, Mourinho was sacked in January. He has flirted with the hopes of a job in the Saudi Pro League as well. Did you know how many times José Mourinho was named the World’s Best Club Coach? Four times.

3. Pep Guardiola – $120 million

Manchester City has been making waves in the English top tier since the takeover by Sheikh Mansour back in 2008. But what truly changed the entire landscape of on-pitch success was probably the man by the sidelines. Pep Guardiola has been in charge of the mammoth task of improving the City side since 2016. So far the Sky Blues have lifted the PL trophy under him five times.

2. Diego Simeone – $129 million

“El Cholo” is his nickname. Diego Simeone is reportedly paid a whopping sum of £30 million per year by Atlético de Madrid. That equates to $38 million in a year. In terms of pure managerial earnings, Simeone had to be the richest. The Argentinian has been in charge of the LaLiga side since 2011.

1. Wayne Rooney – $158 million

With his playing days earnings, Wayne Rooney has made it to the top of the richest managers around in 2024. The English head coach is just 38 and is expected to make more on his post-football career path. Rooney parted ways with Birmingham City on 2 January.

Previously was in charge of D.C. United and Derby County. And there’s no doubt he made most of his earnings from 2004 to 2017 when he used to kick football for Manchester United.
