Sam Johnstone has been a regular choice in Southgate’s squad over the years

After sustaining an elbow injury while playing for England, Crystal Palace custodian Sam Johnstone is “in a race against time” to return to Selhurst Park for the 2023–2024 campaign, according to Sami Mokbel of The Daily Mail.

After Roy Hodgson benched him in favour of Dean Henderson, the goalkeeper returned to the Eagles’ starting lineup before receiving a call-up to Gareth Southgate’s Three Lions team.

After Hodgson left Palace, Oliver Glasner was brought in, giving Johnstone a chance to earn back the top shirt in south London and a lifeline. But after an injury sustained while serving for his country, the custodian might now miss the rest of the campaign.

Prior to halftime, the goalie had not been suffering from any injuries. Sami Mokbel, chief football correspondent for The Daily Mail, claims that Johnstone could miss the whole of the 2023–24 season as well as EURO 2024 due to an elbow injury he suffered this month while playing for England on international duty. It is reported that the stopper was in good condition before the break. In a post on X, the reporter disclosed:

Johnstone was one of three players pulled out of the England squad, which was confirmed by the country on March 24.

Harry Maguire and Kyle Walker also withdrew and went back to their clubs in preparation for the Three Lions’ friendly against Belgium on March 26. At first, Palace officials had hoped that the 31-year-old’s injuries wasn’t too bad.

However, following additional discussions, there is concern that the injury may be more serious than initially thought, which could mean the stopper won’t be able to play again this season.

Oliver Glasner, who ranked Johnstone above Dean Henderson as his first choice between the posts at Crystal Palace, will be disappointed by the defeat.

With the June start of the competition in Germany, the Eagles custodian will be worried about how his injury would impact his hopes of being included in Gareth Southgate’s EURO 2024 squad. Johnstone had been a genuine contender to be the backup for Jordan Pickford for the Three Lions since Aaron Ramsdale hadn’t played for Arsenal and Nick Pope of Newcastle United was presently out with an injury.

Concerned about the current Eagles squad’s lack of depth, journalist Dean Jones recently told GIVEMESPORT (17th March) that Crystal Palace will undergo a “summer of change” under Oliver Glasner. The south London team is at present eight points above Nottingham Forest, who are at present in the final demotion spot in the Premier League table after being docked four points for not adhering to the league’s profit and sustainability regulations.

Nottingham Forest is right now in 18th place. Retaining Palace in the top division will be Glasner’s first priority before what might be an exciting summer at Selhurst Park.
