Saudi Arabia and Uruguay are set for a FIFA World Cup meeting after eight years.

Football’s most prestigious tournament, the 2026 FIFA World Cup, has returned, adding to the absolute excitement worldwide. Co-hosted by the USA, Canada and Mexico, the competition is returning to North America since the 1994 World Cup. It features a record 48 teams instead of the traditional 32, with the coveted title on the line.

The Saudi Arabia national football team will be a nation on everyone’s radar, eager to make a statement on the global stage. They arrive with an unbreakable and determined squad, who are capable of frustrating elite opposition with their discipline. They will play their opening fixture against South American giants Uruguay at the Miami Stadium in Florida, USA.

The nation’s most crucial player for the side will undoubtedly be forward Salem Al-Dawsari. He is set to lead the nation for the first time in the tournament. The forward will be the team’s reliable striking option, establishing himself as one of Asian football’s most iconic and clutch goal scorers.

He is known for famously scoring the winning goal against the eventual champions, Argentina, in the 2022 World Cup group stages. Saudi Arabia are placed in Group H of the 2026 FIFA World Cup, considered a highly competitive route for the Asian side. They will compete alongside Uruguay, Spain, and Cape Verde for a spot in the knockout rounds.

Saudi Arabia are set to feature in a classic, flat 4-4-2 formation for the tournament opener under manager Georgios Donis. Defence will be the main priority for the manager. He focuses on maintaining a highly organised, positionally disciplined backline that stays focused to prevent opposition breakthroughs.

The team relies on a four-man system. Nawaf Boushal, Hassan Al-Tambakti, Ali Lajami and Saud Abdulhamid will be tasked with the responsibility.

The team utilises width across the pitch, with Nasser Al-Dawsari and Ayman Yahya operating as wide midfielders for stretching the opposition. Saudi Arabia’s midfield is controlled through hard-working central midfielders.

Abdullah Al-Khaibari, functioning in the deep-lying ball-winner role, will be responsible for breaking up counterattacks and shielding the defence. He will be supported by Mohamed Kanno. He is a player who uses his physicality and tactical awareness to drive the ball forward into transitions.

Up front, Salem Al-Dawsari will push up into an advanced free-roaming “false nine” forward role. He will use his lethal skills to generate scoring chances alongside the team’s target man. Firas Al-Buraikan will be tasked with holding up the ball and creating openings for his teammates.
