Both sides will clash in the World Cup after 24 years.

Football’s most prestigious tournament, the 2026 FIFA World Cup, has marked its return after four years, with excitement at its peak. Co-hosted by the USA, Canada and Mexico, it is the largest World Cup edition to date. From perennial winners to debutants – a record 48 nations will battle for the coveted title

The Senegal national football team are all set for their opening match at the World Cup 2026. They are considered to be among the best African nations at the competition. They will play their opening fixture against powerhouse France at the New York New Jersey Stadium in East Rutherford, USA.

The nation’s most crucial player is the legendary talisman Sadio Mané. The world-class winger has been the nation’s main attacking focal point over the years. He is known for his incredible in-game awareness and clutch goalscoring.

He has established his legacy as the nation’s all-time top scorer with 55 goals. He will look to utilise his immense experience and clinical execution to guide Senegal throughout the tournament.

Pape Thiaw will lead Senegal for the first time in the competition. He will aim for an impressive performance after guiding the nation to the 2025 AFCON final, after which they were controversially stripped of the win. He was successfully able to navigate the side through a dominant 2026 WC qualification campaign.

They finished at the top of their CAF qualifier group. Senegal are placed in Group I of the 2026 FIFA World Cup, considered one of the most competitive groups of the tournament. They compete alongside France, Norway and Iraq.

While the manager has been experimenting with multiple formations, the 4-3-3 is considered the ideal formation. In defence, the manager focuses on maintaining a physically dominant defensive line, emphasising aggressive aerial duels and positional marking to handle France’s elite attackers.

Team captain Kalidou Koulibaly will assume responsibility for organising the backline. He will form a defensive partnership with Moussa Niakhaté. They will be paired with high-pressing fullback Krépin Diatta on the right and the physically superior El Hadji Malick Diouf on the left to handle defensive transitions.

Senegal’s midfield is largely defined by absolute athletic power in the central space, relentless work rate, and elite ball-winning capabilities to disrupt opposition attacks. Midfield powerhouse Pape Gueye will be responsible for anchoring the midfield throughout the game.

He will be operating alongside Lamine Camara to fulfil the box-to-box role, providing defensive stability and quick ball carrying and movement. Meanwhile, Habib Diarra is the creative outlet for the team, essential in driving forward into half-spaces and applying high-intensity pressure to unlock quick counterattacks.

Finally, in attack, Senegal’s attack depends on overwhelming defenders using their raw pace and physical strength to break defensive lines. Speedster Ismaïla Sarr is tasked with using his direct and unpredictable dribbling skills to stretch the pitch. Meanwhile, forward Sadio Mané cuts inside from the left wing to create lethal scoring chances.

They will look to generate constant danger, feeding cross-balls and direct low passes to the physical Nicolas Jackson. He will be the team’s focal point, operating as a number nine, using his exceptional hold-up play, clinicality, and strength to test the French centre-backs.
