Senegal and Iraq will face each other for the first time at the FIFA World Cup.

Senegal’s time at the 2026 FIFA World Cup has been disappointing; however, they are looking to end their campaign with a victory. The Teranga Lions are set to lock horns with Iraq in their final group-stage game at the Toronto Stadium on Friday, June 26.

The African giants commenced their World Cup campaign with a 3-1 loss against two-time champions France. However, they suffered a disappointing 3-1 defeat, with Kylian Mbappé scoring twice.

Senegal later scored two goals against Norway in their second group-stage game, but it was not enough to overcome the challenge posed by the Vikings. After two games, Senegal, much like their match opponent, Iraq, are without a point in the table.

Nevertheless, they are still in the tournament. If they defeat the Lions of Mesopotamia by three goals, they will have a chance of qualifying for the knockout round. Any other outcome would result in the Teranga Lions’ elimination from the summer competition.

Senegal XI (4-3-3): Mory Diaw; Krépin Diatta, Abdoulaye Seck, Moussa Niakhaté, Ismail Jakobs; Idrissa Gana Gueye, Lamine Camara, Pape Alassane Gueye; Ismaïla Sarr, Ibrahim Mbaye, Sadio Mané.

Thoughts on the lineup

Senegal’s first-choice goalkeeper Édouard Mendy suffered a knee injury during the second half against Norway and has been officially ruled out of the tournament. In his absence, Mory Diaw will keep the gloves for the Teranga Lions.

Veterans Abdoulaye Seck and Moussa Niakhaté will form the centre-back duo, while Krépin Diatta and Ismail Jakobs will play on the flanks. The Teranga Lions’ midfield will be anchored by Sunderland’s Habib Diarra, who will play alongside Lamine Camara and Pape Alassane Gueye.

The African side’s attack will feature Ibrahim Mbaye in the central striking role, while Ismaïla Sarr and Sadio Mané will play on the right and left flanks, respectively.
