Jesse Marsch’s men secure a spot in the last 16.

The South Africa national football team battled it out against the Canada national football team in their round of 32 clash. This 2026 FIFA World Cup clash took place at the Los Angeles Stadium.

Bafana Bafana came up with a strong fight with their strong defence, but during the stoppage time, they conceded a goal, which ended their journey on the grandest stage of them all this year.

On the other hand, the Canadian men’s national soccer team have secured a spot in the FIFA World Cup round of 16 for the first time ever. It was not their best performance in the flagship tournament, but they managed a 1-0 victory in the end. All thanks to Stephen Eustáquio, who fired the ball at the back of the net in the final moments of the game.

Five important things we learned from this match:

1. Canada make history

One of the co-hosts of the FIFA World Cup 2026, Canada, have now secured a spot in the round of 16. Even though they lacked control of the game, Les Rouges managed a 1-0 victory with their performance in the final moments of the game. This is the first time that they have secured a spot in the last 16 of the mega competition.

2. South Africa bow out even after resilience

Bafana Bafana were quite outstanding when it came to maintaining the tempo of the game. They had 58% possession of the ball and their efforts in the backline were commendable. It was only in the 90+2′ when they conceded a goal by the Canadian men’s national soccer team, who came up with 14 attempts on the goal.

3. Stephen Eustáquio’s match-winner

Stephen Eustáquio came up with a sensational strike from outside of the box in the final moments of the game to give the Canada men’s national soccer team a 1-0 advantage. It was an important goal by the 29-year-old midfielder as it helped Les Rouges secure a spot in the round of 16. Eustáquio was also the captain of the squad before Alphonso Davies came on the field in the 75th minute.

4. Alphonso Davies’ crucial presence

Alphonso Davies came on the field in the 75th minute and his presence on the field really bothered the South African defence. He was deployed on the left flank by Jesse Marsch and was a constant threat to the opponent’s defence. Davies looked fit and his presence is going to play a crucial role for Canada in their next game of the FIFA World Cup 2026.

5. Round of 16 challenge for Canada

They have become the first nation to secure a spot in the last 16. Going forward, the challenges will be tough for the Jesse Marsch-led side. They need to work on controlling the tempo. At times their defence also looked vulnerable, but still they managed to secure a clean sheet against Bafana Bafana. The Canadian men’s national soccer team must work on their mistakes.

Who scored a goal for Canada in the round of 32 at the FIFA World Cup 2026?

Stephen Eustáquio scored the match-winning goal in 90+2′.
