South Africa vs Canada: Five key battles to watch out for in FIFA World Cup 2026

Can Juventus star & Canada’s first World Cup hattrick hero Jonathan David propel hosts to historic Round of 16 berth with win over Bafana Bafana?

Los Angeles Stadium (SoFi Stadium) in Inglewood, California, United States of America, gears up to host the Round of 32 fixtures of the FIFA World Cup 2026 where hosts Canada and South Africa lock horns in what is set to be a thrilling contest.

Bafana Bafana finished second in Group A of the FIFA World Cup 2026. Despite a defeat to Mexico in the first game after being reduced to nine men, they bounced back after drawing against Czechia and pulling out a big upset by defeating South Korea and leapfrogging them to qualify for the knockouts.

Canada will be the first host nation to play a World Cup match away from home. They qualified with four points, the fewest by a host nation since the United States in 1994. The 6-0 win over Qatar was Canada’s first-ever clean sheet and a win in the World Cup, but they are coming after a 2-1 defeat to Switzerland.

This is set to be a closely contested fixture, with key player battles determining the outcome. Will Canada’s offensive setup manage to beat the resolute defensive backline of South Africa or will the Bafana Bafana get the better of the hosts? We shall find that out soon.

Preview: South Africa vs Canada prediction, odds, where to watch, time | FIFA World Cup 2026 Round of 32

5. Thalente Mbatha vs Mathieu Choiniere

This feels like homecoming for Mathieu Choiniere, who plays for Los Angeles FC in the MLS and knows this venue better than anyone else. Choiniere will aim to win the battle by initiating early physical contact and disrupt Mbatha’s passing rhythm in the midfield.

The Orlando Pirates defensive midfielder was absolutely brilliant in the last game. He will be looking to bypass the press by utilising quick and one touch passes to keep the ball moving smoothly. In close leads, he can very well slow down the pace of the game and keep the ball on their foot to dictate the tempo.

4. Ronwen Williams vs Maxime Crepeau

The Mamelodi Sundowns FC custodian, who also happens to be the captain of South Africa in the FIFA World Cup, is coming after keeping a clean sheet against a strong South Korean side. He was the best performer for Bafana Bafana in the last game, making two crucial saves to win the game 1-0.

Another Canadian player who has previously played in this venue for LAFC, Crepeau, the Orlando City goalkeeper, has so far kept only one clean sheet and is coming after conceding two goals in the last game. Crepeau will aim to keep his distribution rapid and direct to give South Africa no time to settle.

3. Tajon Buchanan vs Aubrey Modiba

Buchanan has been brilliant so far for Canada. His raw, terrifying pace and acceleration from the right flanks make him uncatchable, and Aubrey Modiba will have a tough time chasing Buchanan throughout the ninety minutes. He has created a lot of chances but has yet to score or give an assist in the World Cup.

The former Cape Town City FC full-back will try to keep a low defensive stance to deny Buchanan space to accelerate into. During counterattacks, his pace and acceleration from the flanks will be key to setting up Oswin Appollis upfront in the wings.

2. Mbekezeli Mbokazi vs Cyle Larin

Mbokazi has been plying his trade in North America with MLS outfit Chicago Fire. The former Orlando Pirates defender will look to deploy a highly energetic and physical style of tracking and will use his upper-body strength to hold the Canadian striker off. This is expected to be a highly physical battle.

The Southampton striker scored for Canada against Bosnia and Herzegovina and Qatar. He has a lot of experience playing in Europe for teams like Club Brugge, Real Valladolid and Mallorca. He is in top-notch form and will act as will act as Canada’s robust target wall.

1. Jonathan David vs Ime Okon

This battle would very well determine the fate of the game. Jonathan David is one of the leading contenders to win the Golden Boot after scoring a hattrick against Qatar. He plays for Juventus in the Italian top flights and faces some of the elite defenders week in and week out.

Okon is coming after a decent spell with Hannover 96 in Bundesliga 2, after they failed to clinch promotion by just a few points. He is a towering and commanding right-footed central defender, who at 22 is proudly rewriting a new chapter in the history of South African football.
