Spain starting lineup vs Saudi Arabia confirmed for FIFA World Cup 2026 match as Lamine Yamal returns
The two sides have already faced each other in a FIFA World Cup game in 2006.
The stage is set for Spain’s second match of the FIFA World Cup 2026. La Roja will be facing Saudi Arabia at the Atlanta Stadium in Georgia on Sunday, June 21.
Luis de la Fuente’s side came into the FIFA World Cup as hot favourites, courtesy of their recent form and triumph in the 2024 European Championships. However, in the opening game, they clashed against Cape Verde, which have a defensive masterclass.
World Cup debutants Cape Verde held the 2010 champions to a goalless draw. Vozinha made seven saves and was named the player of the match. Meanwhile, Roberto Pico Lopes and Diney Borges played in line with their defensive approach, preventing La Roja from scoring a single goal.
Nevertheless, Luis de la Fuente’s side also missed their star wingers, Nico Williams and Lamine Yamal. While Williams missed the whole game, Yamal was subbed by La Fuente for a brief cameo.
Mikel Oyarzabal, alongside Ferran Torres, was leading the charge for La Roja’s attack, but their performances were lacklustre as the Barcelona winger also missed a clear chance. However, with a few changes and a fresh approach, Spain are looking forward to recording their first victory of the campaign.

Thoughts on the line-up
After playing a draw in their first game, La Roja were likely to make a few changes in their starting line-up. Unai Simon and a majority of the back four of the side remain the same, with Marc Cucurella, Aymeric Laporte, and Pau Cubarsí securing the spot, while Pedro Porro gets a chance.
Much like their clash against La Roja, captain Rodri will also team up with Pedri in the midfield. However, Paris Saint-Germain’s (PSG) Fabián Ruiz has been replaced by Dani Olmo, who offers more creativity to the team.
In the attack, despite being thrown under the bus for his performance, Mikel Oyarzabal will continue, while Gavi has been replaced by Lamine Yamal, who made a cameo against Cape Verde. At Ferran Torres’s spot, Alex Baena has been introduced. However, Nico Williams is not yet fully fit for the game.
