Spain and Cape Verde have qualified for the knockout stage of the FIFA World Cup.
Spain defeated Uruguay 1-0 in their last group-stage game of the 2026 FIFA World Cup to top Group H and avoid facing Argentina in the round of 32. However, the news has been terrible for two-time champion Uruguay.
Le Celeste are out of the summer tournament after securing only two points in three games, and their losses were by narrow margins. However, even a single goal becomes an insurmountable margin in a football game.
On that note, let’s take a look at the five key takeaways from the FIFA World Cup 2026 clash:
5. Federico Valverde’s substitution
Federico Valverde was substituted in the 57th minute against La Roja. The Real Madrid star is undoubtedly the most important player in La Celeste’s line-up. However, he gave a lacklustre performance against Spain. He maintained a passing accuracy of 67 per cent while creating only one chance and making three defensive contributions.
Expectations were high with Valverde’s performance; however, he failed to perform as expected. Federico Vinas was called in at his place, but the 27-year-old also failed to make an impression. Interestingly, in a Spain game, he was the only Real Madrid player on the ground
4. Spain faces issues with physical football
La Roja’s lapse in plan becomes apparent as soon as they play against a team with a physical style. Marcelo Bielsa’s style of play is pragmatic, and the Uruguayan team also plays a very physical game.
Later in the World Cup, they might have to clash against teams that also play the game by putting their bodies on the line. Thus, it will be seen how Luis de la Fuente’s team plays.

3. Tough time for Fernando Muslera

At half-time, Fernando Muslera became the first-ever Uruguayan goalkeeper to be substituted in a World Cup game. Sergio Rochet replaced the 40-year-old in goal, and it’s highly likely that we have seen the last of Muslera’s appearances for his country.
Muslera has also set an undefeated record as the only goalkeeper with 5+ errors that led to goals in World Cups since 1966.
2. Spain are not playing like the expected giants
Spain are not performing in the way one might imagine La Roja to in a tournament like the FIFA World Cup. Since they won the tournament in 2010, their success at the global event has been limited.
They have not won a single knockout game and are heavily dependent on a few players. La Roja’s performance in the 2024 European Championships made them look like the hot favourites to win the global competition too. However, given their current performance, they look unlikely to make a deeper run in the tournament.
1. Uruguay’s elimination and Marcelo Bielsa
Marcelo Bielsa will soon leave his job as Uruguay’s head coach. The Argentine manager’s playing style did not suit the South American side, and a lack of forwards with clinical finishing was the final nail in La Celeste’s coffin. With that, the underdogs, the two-time champions, are out of the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
Are Uruguay been eliminated from the 2026 World Cup?
Yes.
Who scored the only goal of the match?
Alex Baena
