Cape Verde secured a point in their first-ever FIFA World Cup game against Spain.
Debutants Cape Verde held European champions Spain to a goalless draw on March 15 at the Atlanta Stadium. La Roja’s attack, which was expected to perform at the FIFA World Cup 2026, looked lacklustre in its first game without its primary wingers.
In the midfield, Pedri created the most chances and completed the most dribbles, while Fabian Ruiz took the joint most shots, equalling Mikel Oyarzabal. Meanwhile, Captain Rodri has the most touches (136). Spain’s midfield again did a decent job, but the attack let them down, lacking intensity.
Even Lamine Yamal, whose health status has been under a huge question mark, was later subbed in for no good reason. However, Cape Verde actually performed well.
Thus, on that note, let’s take a look at the five key takeaways from Spain’s goalless draw against Cape Verde.

Five important things we learned:
1. Cape Verde aren’t an easy nut to crack
One could argue that La Roja’s flight was featureless because they were missing their primary wingers. However, Cape Verde’s resilience can not be overlooked.
Vozinha’s performance will surely go in the history books, but Diney Borges and Roberto Lopes also didn’t step down against the hot favourites. Cape Verde’s highly disciplined defensive strategy helped them sail through the Spanish storm.
2. Spain’s high pressing didn’t working
At the big stage, Spain’s high pressing fails to perform. La Roja kept more than 70 per cent of the possession throughout the game, and in the first half, they pressed heavily with six players in attack. However, Cape Verde’s defence did not flinch. In the first half, Spain attacked aggressively, but when they had a clear chance to score, they lacked finishing.
3. Lack of creativity and finishing
Spain’s line-up lacked creativity. The team was either attacking heavily or keen to keep possession in their half. Pau Cubarsi’s passing accuracy was commendable; however, they needed Dani Olmo as the bridge.
In addition to the lack of creativity, clinical finishing was also missing from the side. Olmo, as well as a box-to-box scoring option, Mikel Merino, were introduced later in the match, but it didn’t help much.
4. Luis de la Fuente’s side lacks a poacher

Spain’s centre forward for the match, Mikel Oyarzabal, got his first touch in the 30th minute. Oyarzabal became the first player in history since 1966 to play the first 30 minutes of a World Cup match without touching the ball even once. Despite everything, the 29-year-old still had the most touches in the opposition box.
Due to the absence of La Roja’s primary wingers, Lamine Yamal and Nico Williams, the side’s game became boring as they struggled to penetrate Cape Verde’s defence from the flanks. La Fuente’s possession-based game depended heavily on the midfielders and the wingers. The dynamic attacking was missing.
5. Vozinha. That’s it.

Vozinha could realistically be the reason behind Cape Verde’s potential qualification to the FIFA World Cup’s knockout stage in the ongoing edition. The 40-year-old made four saves in the first half and seven overall.
Vozinha made a series of heroic saves against a few of the best football players in the world. After the halftime, the 40-year-old was also the highest-rated player in the match. He was eventually named the player of the match.
What was named the player of the match?
Cape Verde’s Vozinha.
Who was the best performer from Spain’s side?
Pedri created the most chances and completed the most dribbles.
