Sweden vs Tunisia: All-time head-to-head record ahead of FIFA World Cup 2026 clash

These two sides are set to meet each other after 23 years in Guadalupe

Flanked closely by the historic Santa Catarina River, the Monterrey Stadium (Estadio BBVA) in Guadalupe, Mexico, gears up to host the opening match week fixture in Group F of the FIFA World Cup 2026, featuring European heavyweights Sweden and African outfit Tunisia.

The last time Sweden played a World Cup game on American soil back in 1994, it was the bronze medal game against Bulgaria in Los Angeles.

They went on to clinch the bronze medal, and after missing the last edition, they are back in the grandest stage of football in the most dramatic fashion. They became the first European team to qualify for the FIFA World Cup after finishing at the bottom of their UEFA World Cup Qualifier group stages.

They are led by Graham Potter, who has previously led Chelsea, West Ham and Brighton.

Talking about Tunisia, they are the first African nation to win a World Cup game, who also defeated defending champions France in the group stages and narrowly missed the knockout stages by a slight margin.

They are coming after a devastating 5-0 defeat to Belgium in the last game, and they must bounce back strongly against Sweden as their next games include heavyweights like Japan and the Netherlands.

In this article, we take a ride down memory lane to find out who has the upper hand against whom. As the two teams prepare to rewrite history, we find out what happened when these two sides last met each other and who scored and impressed more in this fixture.

The next two games saw Sweden winning 1-0 in 1992 and 1999. They were in peak form at that time. Goals from Kennet Andersson and Niclas Alexandersson saw the Scandinavian nation easily winning both the friendlies against Tunisia.

The last and the most recent encounter between these two sides was back in 2003 and Tunisia finally defeated Sweden for the first time in Stade Olympique de Radès. Again, a solitary goal from Najeh Braham was enough to defeat peak Sweden, consisting of players like Ibrahimovic.
