Bangladesh national football team appoint former Bundesliga champion Thomas Dooley as new head coach

Dooley led Philippines to their best-ever FIFA rankings
It has been over four decades since Bangladesh last qualified for Asia’s premier competition, and after failing to make it past the AFC Asian Cup qualifiers in 2026, the Bangla Tigers parted ways with head coach Javier Cabrera to make way for former Philippines gaffer Thomas Dooley.
Apart from that recent win against India, Bangladesh have been winless for almost a year, with their last win coming against Bhutan in June 2025 in a friendly fixture.
They had a terrible campaign in the FIFA World Cup 2026 Qualifiers and also failed to make the most of their AFC Asian Cup 2027 qualification campaign.
The SAFF 2026 Championship are just a few months away, and Bangladesh is all set to host the continental tournament after eight years.
Ahead of the SAFF Championship, The Bangla Tigers have acquired the services of German-American gaffer Thomas Dooley, who is regarded as one of the best coaches in Asian football.
In this article, we take a closer look at Thomas Dooley’s past track record as a manager and why he is best suited to lead Bangladesh in the upcoming tournaments.
Dooley’s early days as USA National Team assistant coach

Almost a decade after hanging up his boots, Thomas Dooley was back as the assistant coach of the USA National team under the great Jurgen Klinsmann, who was coming after guiding Germany to a third-place finish in the FIFA World Cup 2006.
The former US international worked extensively with some of the greatest American players like Landon Donovan, Clint Dempsey and Tim Howard.
During his time as US Assistant coach, he guided the team to the 2014 FIFA World Cup and also won the CONCACAF Gold Cup 2013.
Dooley’s decade long coaching career in Asia

Just a few months ahead of the FIFA World Cup, Thomas Dooley left the US National team to ply his trade as the head coach of the Philippines national team. Under Dooley, the Philippines saw its golden period, and arguably it was the most successful era in the history of the Philippines football.
He propelled the team to 111th in the world in May 2018, which remains the country’s record high. He guided the Philippines to qualify for the 2019 AFC Asian Cup for the first time. The team also went unbeaten throughout the entire final qualifying round.
Apart from just coaching the Philippines national team, he also served as the Sporting Director of Vietnamese club Viettel FC, where he went on to win the 2020 V.League 1 title.
This was the club’s first championship in 23 years, breaking the dominance of Hanoi FC. He later also coached Sri Pahang FC in the Malaysia Super League, where his stay was brief, lasting only a few games.
Why Thomas Dooley is the best fit for Bangladesh football team?

Given Bangladesh’s recent failures, Thomas Dooley’s appointment as the head coach of the Bangladesh national team is widely seen as a strategic move to build from scratch. He has previously navigated teams like the Philippines to top levels of continental football.
He is also arriving fresh from a perfect record with the Guyana national team, where he won all four of his competitive matches. His experience in Vietnam, Malaysia, and the Philippines makes vim a veteran in the South Asian football ecosystem.
He will potentially make his debut in the friendly fixture against San Marino, scheduled in less than a fortnight. He will have an ample team to assess his players ahead of the high-stakes SAFF 2026 Championship. He will have a golden opportunity to win his first major silverware with the Bangla Tigers on home soil.
