Chelsea have spent £1b in three transfer windows under Boehly

A formal agreement permits Chelsea’s owners, notably Todd Boehly, to switch the club’s chairman every five years. The Blues were acquired by Boehly and Clearlake Capital in 2022, and since then, they have invested more than £1 billion in the team just on transfers. Unfortunately, that tactic has not paid off, as the Blues are currently mired in 11th place.

In the last eighteen months, Boehly has taken the brunt of criticism from Chelsea supporters and commentators. But now it’s been revealed that he might not be the club chairman in 2027 because of a special arrangement among the hierarchy.

According to The Telegraph, Behdad Eghbali and Jose Feliciano, the owners of Boehly and Clearlake Capital, have agreed to swap the chairmanship between them once every five years. By 2027, Boehly might still be in the role for an additional five years because there is no requirement for a change to occur.

Despite the attention that Boehly has been under since the club took control, sources close to him have stated that he has no intention of resigning as chairman.

While Feliciano and Eghbali have mostly stayed out of the spotlight, the report does point out that Eghbali’s influence at Stamford Bridge has grown dramatically in the last 12 months.

The story continues by stating that Chelsea are owned by 22 Holdco, a UK-based business, of which Clearlake Capital controls 60% of the stocks and the right to vote. Boehly owns 13% of the company, along with Hansjorg Wyss and Mark Walter.

Since inheriting the club, Chelsea’s management has made huge transfers in the transfer market, and Boehly has primarily served as their public face. A staggering £1 billion has been spent on a wave of players, most of whom have fallen short of expectations.

The fan base has also not been placated by the choice of Mauricio Pochettino, who has a close relationship with Tottenham, a rival team in London. Along with the board, the Argentine has supervised a lacklustre season and has been the target of disparaging chants from the crowd.
