The Australian manager led Spurs to their first-ever European trophy since 1984.

16 days after guiding Tottenham Hotspur to success in the UEFA Europa League final, Ange Postecoglou was fired from the post of manager. Spurs won their first major trophy in 17 years after defeating Manchester United 1-0 in Bilbao.

But it happened near the end of their poorest Premier League season, in which the London team lost 22 of their 38 games and finished in 17th place.

At a triumph parade to commemorate his second campaign’s success in Europe, Ange Postecoglou had informed supporters that “season three is better than season two.”

But Spurs seem to have made up their mind regarding the future of Ange Postecoglou at the club. Even though he has been sacked after leading the club to their first-ever trophy in 17 years, it will be seen as one of the biggest achievements.

Thomas Frank, the manager of Brentford, is predicted to be a top candidate to succeed Postecoglou. Other candidates that have been discussed include Andoni Iraola of Bournemouth, Marco Silva of Fulham, Oliver Glasner of Crystal Palace, and former Spurs manager Mauricio Pochettino, who is currently in charge of the United States national football team.

Spurs stated that Ange Postecoglou will be remembered for leading the team to “one of the club’s greatest moments” by becoming just the third manager in their history to win a European trophy.

They did, however, add that they thought a change was required following a “review of performances” and that they could not base their choice on “emotions aligned to this triumph”.

In Postecoglou’s first season as manager, Tottenham finished fifth, and in his second season, he fulfilled his pledge to deliver trophies.

He said in a statement:

“The opportunity to lead one of England’s historic football clubs and bring back the glory it deserves will live with me for a lifetime.”

“That night in Bilbao was the culmination of two years of hard work, dedication and unwavering belief in a dream.

“There were many challenges to overcome and plenty of noise that comes with trying to accomplish what many said was not possible.”
