Trabzonspor fans invaded the pitch and attacked opposition players

Trabzonspor, one of the biggest teams in Turkish football, has suffered a setback by having to play their next six home games without any fans.

The Turkish Professional Football Disciplinary Board (PFDK) announced this decision in response to a violent incident that happened at a recent Super Lig game.

For their roles in the fight with the opposition’s supporters, Fenerbahce teammates Jayden Oosterwolde and Irfan Can Egribayat were additionally suspended for one match.

Following violent scenes during a league game against rivals Fenerbahce last month, Turkish club Trabzonspor was sentenced to play six home games behind closed doors, the football federation (TFF) of the nation announced on Wednesday. The TFF’s discipline board also fined and suspended goalie Irfan Can Egribayat and Dutch defender Jayden Oosterwolde, both of Fenerbahce.

After kicking a Trabzonspor supporter who had run onto the pitch with his face concealed, Oosterwolde received punishment.

The Trabzonspor supporters stormed the ground following the 3-2 home loss on 17 March when the final whistle blew.Goalkeeper Dominik Livakovic was assaulted in the face during the attacks, which happened while the Fenerbahce team and coaching staff were celebrating their win.In addition, two fines totalling 3.1 million Turkish lire ($97,000) must be paid by the Black Sea club. Bright Osayi-Samuel, a Nigerian international, punched a fan on the pitch but got away with it.

His actions “did not meet the threshold for a violation of disciplinary rules,” the board said.

FIFA boss Gianni Infantino called the scenes “totally unacceptable”.

In 2014, home fans threw objects onto the playing surface, hitting Istanbul club players, causing the match involving Trabzonspor and Fenerbahce to be cancelled at halftime.

The Turkish champion Trabzonspor, who had also won the championship two years prior, made headlines in 2015 when its president confined the referee and his helpers inside the stadium during the night in anger over his choice to not give his team a penalty. In the early hours of the next day, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan called and eventually ordered their release.
