UEFA Super Cup: List of all winners
Super Cup is played between winners of Champions League and Europa League.
The UEFA Champions League and UEFA Europa League winners square off in the annual association football tournament known as the UEFA Super Cup.
Founded in 1972, it was played between winners of the European Cup (renamed the UEFA Champions League in 1993) and the European/UEFA Cup Winners’ Cup until 1999, while the latter was abandoned and was merged with the UEFA Cup (renamed the Europa League in 2009) by UEFA.
The 1999 UEFA Super Cup, in which Lazio defeated Manchester United 1-0, was the final Super Cup played under this configuration.
Since the 1998 version, the tournament has consisted of a single match played in August at a neutral location instead of the two legs that were previously played in the winter, one at the stadium of each participant team.
The Super Cup was held in the Stade Louis II in Monaco from 1998 to 2012. However, since 2013, it has been held annually at a different venue in Europe.
With five titles apiece since the competition’s founding, AC Milan, Barcelona and Real Madrid are tied for the most triumphs. Milan became the first team to win the UEFA Super Cup twice in a row (1989 and 1990) when they won back-to-back season games.
