Legendary striker Luis Suarez leads the side with the iconic No.9 kit

The Uruguay football team led by Marcelo Bielsa confirmed their 26-man squad for the upcoming Copa America 2024 on June 8th. The notable omissions include recently retired veterans Edinson Cavani and Matias Vecino, along with Wolves’ Santiago Bueno and Cadiz’s Maxi Gomez also missing the final cut.

The squad numbers are also out for La Celeste, which sees Luis Suarez lead the talented pack with the No. 9 jersey and his prolific understudy Darwin Nunez settle for No. 19. Nunez had a strong second season for Liverpool this year, with 31 goal contributions (18 goals and 13 assists) across all competitions. He is the one to look out for in the upcoming tournament.

In the goalkeeping department, International’s Sergio Rochet will wear No. 1 for Uruguay, with Franco Israel and Santiago Melé wearing No. 12 and No. 23, respectively. On the other hand, defenders Ronald Araujo and José María Giménez are expected to form the core of the robust backline in this Copa America. The Barcelona star will be wearing No. 4 on his back, with Giménez occupying the No. 2 jersey.

The Uruguayan midfield balance will include the likes of Champions League winner Federico Valverde, who will wear the same No. 15 as he does for his club Real Madrid, along with PSG’s Manuel Ugarte and Tottenham’s Rodrigo Bentancur, who will be wearing No. 5 and No. 6, respectively.

La Celeste is in Group A of 2024 Copa America, placed alongside Panama, the United States, and Bolivia. With a squad featuring a mix of veteran stars and emerging talents, Bielsa’s men will be looking to add to their record 15 Copa titles, with their last triumph coming in 2011.
