Uruguay vs Cape Verde: Five key battles to watch out for in FIFA World Cup 2026

Can debutants Cape Verde pull yet another upset against two-time world champions Uruguay?

Miami Stadium (Hard Rock Stadium) in Miami, Florida, USA, gears up to host a highly anticipated Group H fixture in Matchweek 2 of the FIFA World Cup 2026, as South American giants Uruguay take on Cape Verde in what is set to be a thrilling battle.

Uruguay are coming off a frustrating draw with Saudi Arabia, and they must take lessons from the Spain vs Cape Verde game to break down the African outfit’s impregnable low-block defensive line. Biesla’s side will execute direct wing play and crosses, as the central space is expected to be highly congested.

Cape Verde pulled one of the biggest upsets in the FIFA World Cup 2026 after holding reigning European champions Spain to a goalless draw. They will try to replicate the same structure and rely solely on highly disciplined counterattacks.

This is set to be a closely contested fixture, with key player battles determining the outcome. Will Uruguay’s team manage to beat the resolute defensive backline of Cape Verde, or will the Blue Sharks again pull one of the biggest upsets against Uruguay in the opener? We shall find that out soon.

5. Vozinha vs Fernando Muslera

The world bowed to Vozinha’s greatness when he made seven saves, and his heroics saw Cape Verde pull off one of the biggest upsets against an elite Spain team. The job is not yet done for Vozinha, as he will face some of the finest players, such as Valverde and Bentancur, in the next game.

With Cape Verde sitting deep, Muslera will act as a sweeping deep distributor. The former Lazio and Galatasaray custodian must stay alert and deny Cape Verde any chances during counterattacks.

4. Mathias Olivera vs Dailon Livramento

Unlike Uruguay, Cape Verde would rely heavily on counterattacks and transition play to create chances up front. So the Napoli defender may have a relatively easy shift, but Cape Verde can be extremely quick and dangerous in those moments.

Livramento hardly had much to do against a world-class Spanish side. He worked tirelessly as a lone target man against Spain, but he must be clinical upfront against Uruguay, as there will be chances.

3. Steven Moreira vs Maxi Araujo

Araujo plays for Sporting CP in the Portuguese top flight and has that European pedigree. He will eye high-intensity dribbles on the touchline to push Moreira further behind in his own box. But Moreira also has past experience playing in Europe before moving to MLS.

Moreira will seek to counter Araujo’s linear acceleration by matching his stride early on. He was an absolute rock at the back against elite Spanish wingers.

2. Rodrigo Bentancur vs Jamiro Monteiro

Bentancur is one of the most technically gifted players in the Uruguayan team, and his excellent recovery speed also allows him to press higher up the pitch. The central space will be a bit congested in the next game, and Uruguay must look forward to exploiting half spaces from the very beginning.

Monteiro will aim to make this player battle highly physically. He won crucial fouls against Spain in the last game and completely broke La Roja’s attacking momentum, and he will be tasked with blocking Bentancur’s forward passing vision.

1. Federico Valverde vs Sidny Cabral

Valverde is a world-class midfielder who is extremely difficult to beat in transition plays and possesses an elite ability to accelerate quickly from the centre of the park. The Uruguayan captain, Valverde, is also a two-time UEFA Champions League winner with Real Madrid.

Though there is a massive difference in the technical abilities of both players, Cabral did a fantastic job in the last game to keep Ferran Torres quiet in the wings. He made 5 clearances and was rock solid defensively.
