USA-Iran reach peace deal; Respite for Team Melli’s FIFA World Cup 2026 campaign?

USA and Iran reached a peace deal to end the conflict in the Middle East, with the signing set for Friday.

It has been a troubled campaign for Team Melli in the FIFA World Cup 2026, with the Iranian national team facing several obstacles due to the ongoing conflict between their nation and the United States. However, that situation will hopefully change soon, as the USA and Iran have reached a peace deal to end the war in the Middle East.

The conflict in the Gulf region involving the two nations, along with Israel, started on February 28. This led to serious doubts about Team Melli’s involvement in the ongoing World Cup, since all of their matches were scheduled in the United States. Two of their matches will be in Inglewood, California, while the third is in Seattle.

The Donald Trump administration refused to grant visas to members of the visiting team who had ties to the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps, which includes the president of their football federation, Mehdi Taj. As a result, Team Melli requested that FIFA move their matches to Mexico, which the global football body rejected.

The visiting footballers made waves when they wore black armbands and held schoolbags during a friendly match against Turkiye in March. It was in protest of the 165 students of the Shajareh Tayyebeh school who were murdered by joint USA-Israeli airstrikes.

After inflammatory rhetoric from leaders on all sides, a compromise was eventually reached between FIFA, the Trump administration, and the Iranian football federation. Team Melli accepted the decision to play in the USA. However, they were forced to relocate their base to Tijuana, Mexico, as the USA refused to let the team stay overnight in the country.

Despite the ongoing tensions between the two countries, Pakistan’s Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif surprised the world by announcing that a peace deal had been reached between the two enemies. Trump soon confirmed the news, writing on Truth Social, “The Deal with the Islamic Republic of Iran is now complete.”

Although the exact terms of the deal have not been revealed, Sharif called for “the immediate and permanent termination of military operations on all fronts, including in Lebanon”.

After more than three months of conflict that has seen the deaths of almost 3,500 civilians in the Middle Eastern nation, the USA-Iran deal offers a ray of hope for peace in the Gulf region and stability for the ongoing World Cup.

Team Melli kick off their World Cup campaign with a Group G clash against New Zealand at SoFi Stadium on June 15.

When will the USA-Iran peace deal be signed?

According to the announcement by Pakistan’s Prime Minister Shahbaz Sharif, the peace deal will be signed on Friday, June 19, in Switzerland.
