The biggest sporting event in the history of mankind is just around the corner. There is a lot of excitement around the hosts, the USA, in the upcoming World Cup. After all, they will have the home advantage.

Maybe their golden generation, led by a reputed coach, can create history on home soil. The Stars and Stripes did not have to go through a gruelling qualification process. They also got enough time to curate a squad that can compete against the best teams in the world.

For the first time, the USA has a core group of players who compete in top European leagues and are not just delegated to their domestic MLS league. From Chris Richards to Captain America, Christian Pulisic, USA, are one of the favourites to top their group.

The hosts are drawn alongside Australia, Turkiye and Paraguay. They are led by Argentine mastermind Mauricio Pochettino. The former Tottenham boss will be keen to propel the American side to clinch a podium finish.

Taking a look at the USA’s performance in the World Cup, it has been fairly inconsistent. From winning a bronze medal in the inaugural edition in 1930 to pulling one of the biggest upsets in 1950. In 1950, a team composed entirely of American part-time amateurs, including a dishwasher, a mailman, and a funeral director, defeated a star-studded England squad.

It simply goes to show that the USA has been one of the most interesting teams. In this article, we take a look at their predicted lineup for the FIFA World Cup 2026.

USA predicted lineup formation: 4-3-3

GK: Matt Freese – New York City FC

The American custodian is coming after a decent season with New York City FC in the MLS. While Matt Turner has historically held the shirt for the USA, given Freese’s recent form, he is expected to start between the sticks for Pochettino’s team. He is coming after registering three clean sheets in 15 games.

He has already impressed a lot in the CONCACAF Gold Cup.

RB: Sergiño Dest – PSV Eindhoven

The American right back is coming after winning the Eredivisie with PSV Eindhoven. He had eight goal contributions in 38 games for the Dutch outfit. He functions as a traditional winger out of possession.

No other American right-back possesses the sheer technical press-resistance of Dest. His vast experience playing across top European leagues will be key.

CB: Chris Richards – Crystal Palace

After missing out on the 2022 FIFA World Cup due to a late hamstring injury, this will be Richard’s most anticipated World Cup debut. He is coming after winning the UEFA Conference League with Crystal Palace. The player is in sublime form.

He has that Premier League pedigree that makes him a reliable presence in the defence for the USA.

CB: Tim Ream – Charlotte FC

The veteran American defender put up a defensive masterclass in the last edition. The player helped keep a clean sheet against a star-studded English attacking lineup, led by Harry Kane, Sterling and Saka.

He is 38. In a young and energetic squad, Ream provides the necessary calming presence in the backline.

LB: Antonee Robinson – Fulham

Robinson is arguably the most untouchable name on Pochettino’s roster. He has been playing for Fulham in the English Premier League for over half a decade now. He started almost every single game for the USA in the last edition.

His terrifying speed and overlapping runs from the left flank will be crucial. It will help create opportunities for Pulisic upfront.

CM: Weston McKennie – Juventus

McKennie brings an unshakeable competitive edge to the midfield. He started almost every game in Qatar 2022. He has been a regular starter for Juventus in Serie A for over six seasons before making a move to Leeds United as a loanee.

He had 15 goal contributions in 52 games for Juventus this season.

CM: Tyler Adams – AFC Bournemouth

The youngest captain in the 2022 FIFA World Cup and the youngest American captain since 1950, Tyler Adams played every single minute in the USA’s last World Cup campaign. He is coming after a decent season with AFC Bournemouth. Adams helped propel his side to a continental berth under Iraola’s guidance.

CM: Malik Tillman – Bayer Leverkusen

Tillman made a high-profile switch from PSV Eindhoven to Bayer Leverkusen. He is coming after scoring eight goals in over 40 games for the German giants. The player helped them clinch a UEFA Europa League berth.

His early days went into honing his skills at the reputed Bayern Munich academy. Tillman is one of the brightest talents in the USA squad. He will be a key player to watch out for.

RW: Timothy Weah – Marseille (on loan)

Another Juventus player in the USA lineup. He is coming after an impressive spell as a loanee at Marseille. He had seven goal contributions in over 40 games.

He scored the opening goal for the USA in Qatar against Wales. Weah will be raring to go all guns blazing in front of his home fans.

CF: Folarin Balogun – AS Monaco

Balogun is in terrific form, coming after registering 23 goal contributions in over 40 games for AS Monaco. He was one of the best players for Sébastien Pocognoli, whose side managed to get a continental spot despite an inconsistent form. He is the best striker currently for the USA.

He will look to bury those goal-scoring chances created by Weah and Pulisic in the wings.

He is the heartbeat of Poch’s squad. All eyes will be on Pulisic to lead his nation to glory
