Tim Ream to lead the United States (USA) in the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
With the 2026 FIFA World Cup kicking off in less than two weeks, the footballing world is preparing to witness the grandest spectacle. With football returning to North America after 32 years, the excitement is at an all-time high.
The tournament is set to be co-hosted by the United States, Mexico and Canada, making it the first edition to be hosted by three nations. It will also feature a record 48 teams. It will provide opportunities to nations like Jordan and Curaçao to bring their football culture to the international stage.
Every World Cup has nations that, at the beginning, are considered to be the dark horses. A few of those teams ultimately establish themselves as one of the best-performing sides of the competition. Just like Morocco (2022) and Bulgaria (1994), the United States national football team (USA) has great potential to craft a fairytale story this edition.
United States had a mediocre outing in the 2022 World Cup. However, the side did have a brilliant defensive outing, as the team would only concede four goals.
On the other side, despite navigating through the group stages, the USA was eliminated in the Round of 16 by the Netherlands. However, the United States had an easy qualification route for the 2026 campaign, qualifying automatically as the tournament co-hosts.
Veteran defender Tim Ream was surprisingly backed by manager Mauricio Pochettino to lead the side in the tournament ahead of star player Christian Pulisic. At the age of 38, the Charlotte FC defender is set to be the oldest American player to appear in the World Cup. This immense experience and leadership qualities have prompted the manager to trust him with the captain’s armband.
USA features elite talents from some of the top leagues in world football. Alex Freeman, after an impressive domestic season with Villarreal, became a quick favourite in Pochettino’s system. He is widely regarded for his defensive abilities and athleticism; he is utilised to serve as a modern fullback.
At 30 years old, Cristian Roldan was another surprising pick for the tournament, with the Seattle Sounders captain picked to provide leadership and crucial midfield depth.
USA has a difficult group stage to progress from before entering the knockout battles for the coveted trophy. They are placed in Group D of the 2026 FIFA World Cup, dubbed as one of the most competitive groups of this edition. It comprises Australia, Paraguay and Türkiye.
The side will play their first match against Paraguay on June 12 at the SoFi Stadium in Los Angeles.
