The Yanks are now on a three-match winning run against the Socceroos.

USA faced Australia for their second group stage game of the 2026 FIFA World Cup. The Seattle Stadium witnessed this entertaining contest.

The Mauricio Pochettino-led are now on top of the Group D points table. They are coming in after securing a 2-0 win against the Australia national football team and are now bound for the round of 32. They did face some slight issues with their performance, but the Yanks improvised and came out on top to secure three important points.

Tony Popovic’s men were not quite good enough on the field, but they still have a chance to make it to the knockout stage of the mega competition.

Five important things we learned from this match:

1. Defensive blunders from Australia

Early in the game, the Tony Popovic-led side made some huge mistakes in the backline and conceded two goals in the first-half itself. Cameroon Burgess netted an own goal and then Alex Freeman fired the ball into the back of the net to make it 2-0 for the United States. The Socceroos comparatively did well in the second half, but it was too late.

2. Shutting down the critics

The United States men’s national soccer team have now secured back-to-back wins in the FIFA World Cup 2026. They have secured the round of 32 spot after defeating Australia by 2-0. Ahead of the competition, Mauricio Pochettino’s men faced a lot of criticism due to their performances. They have now turned the tide upside down with consecutive wins.

3. USA did not miss Christian Pulisic

The Yanks came up with a top-of-the-line performance against the Socceroos. Christian Pulisic was not a part of USA’s lineup for their game, but the United States football team never looked on the back foot during the game. They still had the same intensity in the attacking front, with Folarin Balogun keeping the Australian defence on edge. They also kept the majority of the ball control, which helped them build pressure on their opponents.

4. Alex Freeman’s first goal at the World Cup

The 21-year-old right-back came up with a sensational header and fired the ball into the back of the net. His goal doubled the lead for the USA in the 43rd minute. This shifted the momentum completely in the Yanks’ favour, who then went on to secure an easy win. Other than scoring the goal, Alex Freeman was a menace to the Australian defence on the right.

5. Australia’s lack of quality in attack

The Australia national football team performed well against Turkiye, but it was not quite the same against the United States. They did not control the game well and only had five attempts to score a goal. Only two of them were on target and neither of them made it to the back of the net. They need to step up here and come up with a better strategy for the remaining game.
