The USA are hosting the FIFA World Cup after 32 years.
Co-hosts USA are set to face Paraguay in their first clash of the FIFA World Cup 2026 on June 12 at the Los Angeles Stadium in Inglewood, California. Both teams are drawn in Group D for the summer competition alongside Australia and Turkiye.
Mauricio Pochettino’s side secured direct qualification for the tournament as co-hosts alongside Canada and Mexico. Meanwhile, Paraguay’s berth in the FIFA World Cup was confirmed after they finished sixth in the CONMEBOL qualifiers. With 28 points, they secured the final automatic qualification spot.
Gustavo Alfaro’s side has struggled to score goals. During the qualifying round, they netted just 0.78 goals per game, the joint-lowest average of any side to reach the finals. Additionally, they were goalless in 9 of their 18 CONMEBOL qualifiers.
However, Paraguay’s pragmatic style has been well supported by their defence, as they conceded only 10 goals in qualifying. Sunderland’s Omar Alderete and Palmeiras’ Gustavo Gomez have formed the South American side’s defensive duo.
Meanwhile, with Antonee Robinson and Sergino Dest on the wings, the USA can play exciting football. The team can score, but keeping the net secure could be a hard nut to crack for the side. Matt Freese, who played between the poles against Germany in a pre-World Cup friendly, is expected to start in the goal against Paraguay, too.
The match already looks exciting because both teams play very different styles.
