Brazil had to settle for a 1-1 draw against Uruguay.

One of Brazil’s best sportsmen, Vinicius Jr, had his ancestry made public by the Brazilian Football Confederation (CBF) in observance of Black Consciousness Day.

The forward’s DNA test was described in a ceremony held at Fonte Nova on Tuesday, November 19, before the game against Uruguay in the 12th round of the South American World Cup qualifiers.

According to an ancestry document the Seleçao forward acquired, his ancestors were from Cameroon, notably from the Tikar ethnic group. This symbolic display is a component of the CBF’s “Raizes de Ouro” campaign, which aims to identify the players’ origins by working with a DNA tracing business. The star’s African ancestry was revealed through tests he conducted as part of this project.

“For us, Vini Jr. is not only the best football player in the world today, but also a symbol of resistance against racism and a global inspiration,” stated the organization.

Vini Jr.’s forefathers were members of the Tikar tribe in Cameroon, the CBF found in collaboration with AfricanAncestry.com, an organization that tracks genetic heritage for Black people worldwide. The ‘Roots of Gold’ campaign, which emphasizes the heritage and pride of the Afro-Brazilian community, particularly in football, includes this project.

Apparently, Vinicius José Paixão de Oliveira, the forward’s father, knew about the tribute:

“It’s important for us to know where we came from. Many Brazilians actually don’t know their ancestry, our heritage. But I’m happy, we are from Cameroon too.”

Vini Jr. wore a unique jersey with the flags of Brazil and Cameroon on it when he took the field for the match against Uruguay.

However, Brazil once again fell to a 1-1 draw against Uruguay as their sluggish performance has persisted in international games, while Vinicius has remained toothless for the national team.

With this year’s international break over now, the 24-year-old will return to club action when Real Madrid face Leganes. Vinicius has been in top form for the club with 12 goals in 16 matches across all competitions.
