Habib Diarra scored in the fourth minute for the Lions of Teranga in the match.
Senegal took on Iraq in their final Group I fixture in the ongoing FIFA World Cup 2026 at BMO Field in Toronto, Canada, on June 26. The Lions of Teranga needed a win in the game to stay in contention for qualification, and they took an early lead courtesy of Habib Diarra.
After a bright start in the contest, the breakthrough moment came in just the fourth minute. Idrissa Gana Gueye’s header from a corner was parried behind for a second set-piece opportunity for the African side.
This time, Abdoulaye Seck’s delivery from the corner found Habib Diarra. The midfielder outjumped his marker, and his bullet header beat Ahmed Basil and found the back of the net.
This was a must-win game for both sides, who were looking to clinch third place in the group. The Sunderland midfielder gave the African giants a big advantage. Iraq’s task was made much tougher when Rebin Sulaka was sent off in the 13th minute.
