Araujo’s goal drew Uruguay level with Saudi Arabia in tonight’s World Cup match.
Uruguay opened their FIFA World Cup 2026 campaign with a match against Saudi Arabia at Hard Rock Stadium in Miami Gardens, Florida. The South American giants fell behind to a first-half goal from Abdulelah Al-Amri, and needed a late strike from Maxi Araujo to draw level in the contest.
Despite being the favourites on paper, La Celeste were surprised by Saudi Arabia’s spirited display. The Middle Eastern nation took the lead before half-time through Al-Amri. Uruguay fought back in the second half, but were largely frustrated by a tight Saudi defence.
The breakthrough moment came in the 80th minute. The initial shot from Federico Vinas was saved by goalkeeper Mohammed Al Owais. The loose ball fell kindly for Araujo, with the left-winger tapping it in from close range.
It was a deserved goal for La Celeste, who dominated the entirety of the second half. They threatened the Saudi goal several times, but Al Owais made some good saves to keep his side in the contest and eventually earn a point for the Green Falcons.
