Paraguay have scripted history by defeating four-time champions Germany in the 2026 FIFA World Cup knockouts. The South American side had a tough start to their campaign, suffering a 4-1 defeat to the co-hosts, the US.

However, currently, they are on a three-match unbeaten streak. Paraguay displayed great composure as they stood true to their disciplined defensive approach against Julian Nagelsmann’s side. With the historic triumph, Orlando Gill has reached the Round of 16 for the fourth time and for the first time since 2010.

Additionally, they have become the first team to defeat Germany in a penalty shoot-out at the FIFA World Cup. It was also Paraguay’s second knockout victory in the competition, with the first coming over Japan in 2010.

Nevertheless, the victory has never been completed without heroes. And one of the biggest heroes behind the South American side’s triumph was Orlando Gill. The 6-foot-6-inch goalkeeper gave a career-defining performance against the four-time champions.

Orlando Gill, who recently celebrated his birthday, was born on June 11, 2000, in San Lorenzo, Paraguay. He started his football journey at Club 13 de Junio and later played for Club Sportivo San Lorenzo.

Throughout his youth career, he played only for those two sides before eventually earning a senior deal with CA San Lorenzo de Almagro II in 2023. Last year, he made his first-team debut. Since then, he has made 59 appearances for the first team, conceding 44 goals and keeping 29 clean sheets across all competitions.

Orlando Gill also made his senior debut for Paraguay’s national team last year in September. He has only played ten matches for La Albirroja so far, but has already created a name for himself. According to reports, the 26-year-old has already been in transfer talks with Turkish side Besiktas and La Liga’s Valencia.
