Rubén Vargas also became the first Swiss player to score in two consecutive games since 2006.

Switzerland are currently taking on co-hosts Canada in their last group stage game of the 2026 FIFA World Cup. The action-packed game is being played at BC Place in Vancouver, with the winner of the fixture taking first place in Group B.

Before the halftime break, Switzerland followed their high-pressing plan and dominated the co-hosts, maintaining majority possession. However, after the hydration break, Canada began to show aggressive intent. The co-hosts also had more shots on goal; however, courtesy of Gregor Kobel, they failed to break the deadlock in the first half.

As things stand, Les Rouges will top the group if they draw against Nati in the final group-stage game. However, both sides would like to carry the momentum into the knockout round of the 2026 World Cup, and Ruben Vargas has taken a step forward for Switzerland.

The 27-year-old netted a crucial goal for Nati against Canada. Vargas scored the fastest second-half goal in the FIFA World Cup since 2010. He also became the first Swiss player to score in two consecutive games since 2006.
