Sebastián Beccacece’s style of play is influenced by Marcelo Bielsa.
Ecuador defeated four-time champions Germany 2-1 at MetLife Stadium on Thursday, June 25, to most likely secure a spot in the knockout rounds of the 2026 FIFA World Cup as one of the eight best third-placed teams.
La Tri, who prefer playing defence in football, entered the game without a win and without a single goal to their name in the tournament. However, goals from Nilson Angula and Gonzalo Plata helped the South American nation edge past the 2014 champions and qualify for the World Cup last 32.
However, behind their historic knockout qualification, their manager, Sebastián Beccacece, has played a huge role. The Argentine technician joined La Tri in August 2024, succeeding former manager Félix Sánchez, and the rest is history.

Born on December 17, 1980, in Rosario, Argentina, Beccacece played for the Argentine amateur clubs Lavalle and Juan XXIII as a right-back in his formative years. However, he soon realised he wouldn’t be able to become a top-flight player and joined Peruvian side Sport Boys as an assistant coach in 2003.
Sebastián Beccacece also reportedly declined an offer by current Uruguay head coach Marcelo Bielsa to work as his assistant at the Chile national team in 2010.
His first major role as a manager came in 2016 when he joined Universidad de Chile. Sebastián Beccacece then also worked with Defensa y Justicia before having a brief stint as Argentina’s assistant manager. Before joining La Tri as the manager, he also served stints at Eiche, Independiente, and Racing Club.
Beccacece’s style of play was also criticised for being too defensive. He was advised to play more attacking football; however, his way of playing has benefited his side so far.
La Tri have qualified for the global competition five times, including the ongoing edition. Their best finish came in 2006, when they reached the round of 16. However, they have already scripted history by qualifying for the knockout stage of the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
What other national teams has Sebastián Beccacece been a part of?
Argentina as an assistant manager.
When did he join Ecuador as the manager?
August 2024.
