Yan Diomande started for the Elephants in the Group E match against Ecuador tonight.
In a cagey FIFA World Cup 2026 clash against Ecuador at Lincoln Financial Field on June 14, it was Yan Diomande who proved to be a spark down the wings for Ivory Coast. Starting on the right for the Elephants, the RB Leipzig winger became the youngest player to ever feature for the African giants in the quadrennial tournament.
Aged just 19, Diomande is one of the youngest players in the expanded 48-team tournament in North America. However, he is not the only youngster in the Ivorian squad, with Hoffenheim’s 20-year-old winger Bazoumana Toure starting on the left wing.
The first half of the Ivory Coast vs Ecuador match was a defensive masterclass. However, there were plenty of chances for both sides to break the deadlock, with La Tri hitting the woodwork twice. The same theme continued in the second half, with poor finishing letting down both teams.
Diomande was the best player on the pitch for the 2023 African champions. He created five chances in the opening hour, one of which was classified as a big chance. He had two shots, with one fizzing just over the crossbar before the hour mark.

Diomande’s journey is quite an interesting one. Born in Abidjan, he moved to the USA at the age of 15. After excelling in high school football, he earned a trial with Scottish giants Rangers before eventually joining La Liga side Leganes.
After breaking into the senior side, he made 10 appearances in six months before RB Leipzig activated his 20-million-euro release clause and signed him on a five-year contract. The Ivorian scored his first goal for the German side in the DFB-Pokal a month after joining.
Last season, he scored 13 goals and registered 10 assists across all competitions. He scored a hat-trick in December against Eintracht Frankfurt, becoming the second-youngest player to achieve this feat in the Bundesliga.
Since making his international debut in October 2025, the winger has become a vital part of the Ivorian setup due to his pace and trickery on the flanks. Diomande has since earned 11 caps, scoring three goals for his national team.
