Wissa’s goal equalised for DR Congo in their World Cup opener against Portugal.

Yoane Wissa stunned the crowd in Houston with a stunning header to draw DR Congo level in their FIFA World Cup 2026 match against Portugal on June 17. It was a special strike for the African team as it marked their first-ever goal in FIFA’s flagship tournament.

The Portuguese side dominated the match from kick-off, and Joao Neves gave them the lead in the sixth minute with a fine header. DR Congo, however, responded well, defending their goal with greater urgency to deny the Selecao das Quinas.

The moment of magic came with the final attack before half-time. Lens full-back Arthur Masuaku floated in an accurate cross into the middle of the Portuguese box, which was met by a completely unmarked Wissa. He diverted it into the top corner, giving Diogo Costa no chance.

Born in the Parisian suburb of Epinay-sous-Senart, Wissa started his career in the LB Chateauroux academy. After making his senior debut there, he moved to Angers on a free transfer, where he spent time on loan at Laval and Ajaccio.

Ligue 2 side Lorient signed him in the 2018 winter transfer window, and Wissa went on to become a key part of the team. After helping the club reach promotion and then stay in Ligue 1, he departed for English Premier League side Brentford in 2021.

The striker instantly settled into life at the Community Stadium, scoring five goals in his first six appearances at the Bees. He finished his first season with 10 goals in 34 appearances. He scored 20 goals in his final season with the club in 2024-25.

He was signed by Newcastle United for an initial fee of £50 million. However, an injury delayed his debut for the club, which finally came in December. He struggled in his debut season for the Magpies, scoring just three goals and registering two assists in 28 appearances across all competitions.

Wissa made his DR Congo debut in 2022 and has earned 39 caps for the Leopards. He has scored nine goals and provided seven assists for his international team.
